The Technical Librarian is responsible for managing and expanding the library's collection of books and materials, providing research and reference assistance, and maintaining the library's technology infrastructure. The role involves strategic acquisitions, cataloging, creating bibliographies and metadata, and ensuring easy access to materials. The librarian oversees communication updates on new acquisitions and library services.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to obtain and maintain customer clearance for system, facility, equipment, and property access.

  • Experience in online cataloging systems, web scale discovery systems, and current MARC/KBART/RDA standards and LC classification system.

  • Experience with SharePoint, usage statistics, Excel and other MS-Office tools, Adobe Acrobat, knowledge of applications such as SQL.

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of library operations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Develops and maintains a collection of technical information for researchers, scientists, and engineers.

  • Builds an extensive network of technical information resources and contacts from government agencies, universities, and professional associations.

  • Communicates with researchers to stay informed on relevant topics and effectively target technical publications.

  • Creates abstracts, bibliographies, and metadata to classify information, and obtain translations of literature as needed.

  • Supports and maintains the library's technology infrastructure and information retrieval tools.

  • Maintains, evaluates, and updates access and metadata related to electronic non-patent literature in the USPTO’s library and web-scale information systems.

  • Catalogs and edits bibliographic records, maintain web-scale discovery systems, and make recommendations for electronic resources management.

  • Compiles library statistics and analyze data for USPTO-wide reporting and troubleshoot issues related to electronic resources.

  • Supports upgrades and transitions of electronic library content, gather data and metadata on electronic resources, and provide analysis to highlight trends and issues.

  • Coordinates and facilitates project scope and requests with client staff and work independently on overall project objectives and requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree and a minimum of four (4) years of experience leading and/pr providing support in tracking, maintaining, and upgrading electronic resources, or equivalent combination of education/experience. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Regularly required to sit. Regularly required use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms to handle objects and operate tools, computer, and/or controls. Required to speak and hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Exposed to general office noise with computers printers and light traffic.
