    Position Description   

    Position Title:                   School Librarian
    Reports To:                      Building Principal 
    Location:                          Eden Hall Upper Elementary School
    Salary:                             Pine-Richland School District considers both level of education as well as teaching experience in determining starting salaries.   
                                            The starting annual salary for a full-time Pine-Richland School District teacher in the 2025-2026 school year will be at least
                                             $60,957.

    SUMMARY:
    This position is responsible for planning, administering and implementing the library/electronic media resource center program to support the educational philosophy and objectives of the school district, as well as establishing procedures and protocols for the smooth and efficient operation of the library to best meet the needs of the building’s students and staff. 
     
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned.
    • Establish annual and long range goals for the library program which support the approved curriculum, in cooperation with the building principal and library department members.
    • Develop a balanced collection, representative of diverse points of view and conscious of our pluralistic society in accordance with the school district’s materials selection policy.
    • Prepare and administer library budget; encouraging faculty input concerning suggested purchases and additions.
    • Maintain a relevant professional library to support the needs of staff.
    • Provide group and individual instruction to students in information technology skills, research strategies and use of technology and related library/media center resources and equipment.
    • Develop lesson plans for teaching information and instructional technology skills.
    • Promote reading and library use (such as: storytelling, book-talks, displays, publications special events, etc.)
    • Provide reference and reader advisory services to the general student body, including students who have special reading problems, unusual intellectual interests or special educational needs.
    • Understand the role of information technology in instruction, student learning and professional development and implement district and building-level technology initiatives.
    • Maintain an efficient system of classifying, cataloging and circulating all library materials; instruct teachers and students in the use of the library system and resources, for print, non-print and electronic.
    • Arrange for inter-library loans within the school district and Access-PA (high school) outside the district.
    • Prepare library use schedule with input from teachers and building administrators to make library resources easily accessible to students.
    • Serve as a resource consultant, as needed on curriculum or technology committees.
    • Serve as resource for building technology/media needs, as needed or required.
    • Keep records of circulation, use, purchases and losses; provide reports, as required.
    • Train library assistants and/or coordinate student or parent volunteers, as needed or required.
    • Create a user-friendly library environment that fosters maximum use by students and staff.
    • Serve as a resource for issues regarding copyright and intellectual freedom.
    • Work cooperatively with public libraries (local, county and regional).
    • Participate in extra-curricular activities in the community and with students.  This may include volunteering time to work with students on school projects, serving on committees or participating in the sponsorship of student activities, either as a volunteer or by supplemental contract.
    • Serve as a member of department/building teams or committees, as needed.
    • Comply and ensure enforcement of school board policies relating to maintenance of library collection and materials.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records, as required by law, and ensure that all activities comply with Board policies, rules and guidelines and all administrative requirements.
    • Maintain effective working relationship with professional and support staff, administration, students, parents and community groups.
    • Regular and timely attendance.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant Superintendent or their respective designees.
     
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Supervise all activities, equipment and materials in the library.  Train and supervise student or parent volunteers as needed.  Take all reasonable and necessary precautions to protect students, district equipment, materials and facilities.

     
    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
    A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a current Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate with K-12 Library endorsement are required, along with evidence of high academic achievement in completed coursework; a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree is preferred.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    Valid PA certification endorsed for Library Science K-12; all current criminal record and child abuse clearances and background reports required by law and board policy.

    COMMUNICATION/LANGUAGE SKILLS AND SIGHT REQUIREMENTS
    Excellent written and oral communication skills required.  Must be able to speak in a clear, strong voice to students, so that instructions are heard in large groups and instructional areas. 
     
    COMPUTER SKILLS
    Ability to use and provide instruction in a PC or Macintosh environment, while assisting students, is required.  Demonstrated proficiency with both PC and Mac applications, and library, media and other instructional technologies required.
     
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
    Ability to utilize statistical concepts as they apply to educational measurement and research.
     
    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
     
    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in the area of library science and instructional technologies.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of and in compliance with all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

    During a typical workday, this position is required to stand approximately 75-95% of the day on flat surfaces.  Periods of continual standing can be up to 30 minutes at one time, but are at the librarian’s discretion.  Librarians may change positions as desired.  While standing, librarians may write on the chalk/markerboard/whiteboard or instruct students from a central location in the classroom.  Standing is performed intermittently with sitting and walking.  Librarians walk about the classroom while instructing and throughout the school day (from parking lots, during fire drills, etc.).  Lifting/carrying requirements of teachers are minimal.  They are required to lift books and classroom supplies weighing less than 10-15 pounds; heavier objects weighing up to 25 pounds (AV or computer equipment).  Carts are available to transport heavier items.  Pushing/pulling - Librarians are required to push/pull file cabinets or desk drawers.  Climbing/balancing - Is required.  Stooping, kneeling, bending at waist/knees - Librarians may stoop or kneel (such as at a student’s desk) while engaged in special projects.  Reaching - Teachers may reach on a frequent basis while performing typical job functions, primarily between the knee and shoulder levels.  Dexterity - Fine manipulation is a requirement of this position while operating a computer.  Librarians must also demonstrate legible handwriting which can be understood by students and adults.
