    Nisswa Community Children’s Library Assistant 

     

    The Nisswa Community Children’s Library Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Nisswa Community Children’s Library and providing excellent service to library patrons. Their responsibilities span a range of tasks that ensure the library runs smoothly and meets the needs of its users. The days and times will vary depending on the season. This position does involve days (during the summer), evenings (during the school year) & weekends. 

     

    Job Summary: The Nisswa Community Children’s Library Assistant is responsible for providing administrative and customer service support within the library (outside of school hours). This role involves assisting patrons, maintaining library materials, and supporting library programs and services.

     


    Patron Services: 

     

    Customer Assistance: Greet and assist library patrons with locating materials, using library resources, and answering general inquiries.

     

    Library Card Management: Issue new library cards, renew existing ones, and manage patron accounts.

     

    Check-In/Check-Out: Perform check-in and check-out of library materials using the library's circulation system.

     

    Reference Assistance: Help patrons with research and reference questions, including the use of online databases and digital resources.

     


    Library Operations:

     

    Open/Close Library: Opening (unlocking), securing and locking up the library is required. 

     

    Shelving and Organization: Sort and shelve books, periodicals, and other library materials accurately according to the library’s classification system.

     

    Cataloging Support: Assist with the cataloging and classification of new materials under the direction of senior library staff.

     

    Collaboration/staffing: Communicating needs around scheduling and working with the other library assistant to be sure that the hours are covered and communicated with the building administration 

    Program Support

     

    Event Assistance: Support library programs and events by preparing materials, setting up spaces, and assisting during activities.

     

    Community Outreach: Participate in outreach activities to promote library services and programs within the community.

     

    Administrative Duties

     

    Clerical Tasks: Perform routine clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, and answering phones.

     

    Report Generation: Assist in the preparation of statistical reports and data collection for library management.

     

    Inventory Management: Monitor and manage the inventory of library supplies and equipment.

     

    Qualifications

     

    Education and Experience

     

    Age Requirements: Must be sixteen years old or older

     

    Experience: Previous experience in a customer service role, preferably in a library or educational setting, is beneficial. A genuine interest in reading and supporting others is required. 

     

    Skills and Abilities

     

    Customer Service: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to providing high-quality service to library patrons.

     

    Attention to Detail: Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in cataloging and organizing materials.

     

    Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with library management systems, basic computer applications, and digital resources.

     

    Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to a positive work environment.

     

    Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    Schedule: June - August (two - three days per week 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)

     

     & the months of September & May (two evenings a week from 3:30-5:30 p.m.) 

     

    Environment: Work is performed in a library setting with frequent interaction with the public. 

     

    Compensation and Benefits

     

    Salary: starting at $16.00/hr
