Description

The Library Director serves as the chief administrative officer of the Spring Hill Public Library and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of library operations, services, programs, and staff. This position operates under the joint guidance of the Library Board of Trustees and City Administration to ensure alignment with organizational priorities, regulatory requirements, and community needs.
The Director acts as a key community leader and advocate, fostering partnerships and ensuring the library remains an essential, forward-looking resource. The position also plays a critical role in planning and executing the transition to a new state-of-the-art library facility.

Examples of Duties


Leadership and Administration

  • Provides visionary leadership and direction for all library operations, services, and programs
  • Develops and implements strategic plans, goals, and performance measures
  • Ensures compliance with policies established by the Library Board of Trustees and applicable regulations
  • Serves as the primary advisor to the Library Board and attends all required meetings
  • Coordinates with City Administration to align library operations with broader municipal objectives
Financial Management
  • Prepares, administers, and monitors the annual operating and capital budgets
  • Oversees financial reporting, expenditures, and internal controls
  • Identifies and pursues grant funding and alternative revenue sources
  • Ensures responsible stewardship of public funds
Staff Management and Human Resources
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates library staff and volunteers
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, inclusive, and productive workplace culture
  • Implements personnel policies and manages employee performance and development
  • Develops and supports ongoing staff training and professional growth opportunities
Library Services and Collections
  • Plans, organizes, and evaluates library programs, services, and initiatives
  • Oversees development and maintenance of physical and digital collections
  • Ensures services meet the needs of diverse populations across the community
  • Maintains high standards for customer service, accessibility, and inclusion
Community Engagement and Outreach
  • Serves as the primary representative and advocate for the library within the community
  • Builds and maintains relationships with local organizations, schools, government entities, and stakeholders
  • Collaborates with Friends of the Library, Library Foundation, and regional partners
  • Promotes library services through outreach, marketing, and public engagement
  • Responds to community needs, trends, and feedback
Facilities and Technology Oversight
  • Oversees maintenance, safety, and functionality of library facilities and equipment
  • Directs planning and implementation of technology systems and digital services
  • Leads long-range facility planning, including development of a new library facility
  • Coordinates capital improvement projects and infrastructure upgrades

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree in library science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution is required
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible library experience, including supervisory or leadership roles
  • Experience in budgeting, personnel management, and strategic planning
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
EQUIPMENT
  • Standard office equipment including computers, printers, and telecommunication devices
  • Library-specific systems including integrated library systems, digital resources, and cataloging tools
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to perform work in an office and public service environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift materials up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public
