Under the direction of the Adult Services Manager, the Adult Services Library Assistant is responsible for providing access to the library’s materials and services in a friendly manner by performing a variety of reference, circulation, programming, and clerical functions.

  

Essential Duties:

  • Assist with collection development and maintenance.
  • Ensure all library patrons receive excellent, equitable, and efficient customer service.
  • Ensure patron record confidentiality.
  • Maintain an attractive, neat, clean, and welcoming Adult Services area.
  • Organize and maintain all departmental supplies and equipment by demonstrating neatness, accuracy, thoroughness, and general effectiveness.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate adult and family programs.
  • Provide information to patrons in person and by phone using print and non-print resources.
  • Recommend, communicate, and enforce all library policies and procedures.
  • Work all public services desks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Expected Hours of Work:

Must work an average of 20.0 hours a week. On-site attendance and some evenings and weekends are required.

Week 1:

Sunday               2:00 pm - 6:00 pm        

Monday              4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Tuesday             4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Wednesday        4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Saturday             9:00 am - 5:30 pm


Week 2:

Monday              4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Wednesday        4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Friday                 10:30 am - 7:00 pm

Saturday             9:00 am - 1:30 pm


Week 3:

Monday              4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Tuesday             4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Wednesday        4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Friday                 10:30 am - 7:00 pm


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Library experience preferred.


Required Skills:

  • Ability to exercise initiative and maintain professionalism in uncomfortable situations.
  • Ability to read and recommend age-appropriate materials for patrons.
  • Knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, adult literature and online resources.
  • Ability to keep up to date on adult literature, adult trends, and adult materials through reading journals, websites, listservs, etc.
  • Ability to organize, plan, set priorities, use time effectively, and meet deadlines while working with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to do basic math for routine calculations.
  • Ability to adapt, remain flexible, and flourish in a changing environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to be tactful and respect confidentiality during interactions with both staff and patrons.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including through email.
  • Willing and able to speak effectively in public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, and volunteer groups of varying personalities and ages and to serve the public courteously in a variety of situations.
  • Contributes to creating an environment oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive teamwork.
  • Possesses strong analytical, time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills as well as the ability to anticipate future needs.
  • General computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, and MS Office applications; Word, Excel.
  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational, and educational needs of adults.
  • Ability to take initiative and interest in improving existing work techniques and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.


Physical Demands

  • Moving 50lbs. carts and handling moderately heavy boxes of books when the occasion requires.
  • Ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, type, pick, pinch, hear, and perform repetitive motions when the occasion requires.
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
  • Movement through facility locations and assisting patrons.
  • Ability to handle books, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to reach above the head and below the knee to retrieve shelved items.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to identify materials on shelving up to 90” and to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of type sizes.
