Distinguishing Features of Work

The Advanced Learning Library of the Wichita Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the Adult Literacies work group within our Literacies Division. This is a part-time, non-exempt position with regularly scheduled evening and weekend shifts.

We’re looking for someone who is customer-focused and has a passion for lifelong learning. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be comfortable engaging with individuals of all ages and diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate strong awareness and responsiveness to the unique needs of Library customers

Schedule: This position works 20 hours per week, with the following fixed shifts:

  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Sunday: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

The remaining 8 hours per week are open to negotiation, depending on staffing needs and candidate availability.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Staffs a busy service desk and responds to customers’ information needs, ranging in topic and complexity, in-person or via phone/chat/email.
  • Assists with library programs for adults (18+). Collaborates with Adult Literacies teammates, other work groups, and community partners as needed.
  • Conducts one-on-one reference and research consultations with customers
  • Creates displays for proactive reader’s advisory on a range of topics, both fiction and nonfiction.
  • Assists customers with basic technology needs (e.g. computers, software, internet searches, mobile devices, copier/scanner, etc.).
  • Assists with collection maintenance as needed (e.g. conditional weeding, tidying shelves, pulling holds, and shelving).
  • Assists customers with the use of library services.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Requirements of Work

  • Must have knowledge of standard library principles, practices, and methods
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external customers.
  • Must be able to effectively use a computer, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, library databases, and integrated library systems, preferably Polaris/LEAP.
  • Must be able to discern appropriate, reliable sources of information (both print and electronic) to answer reference questions. 
  • Must have knowledge about reading trends and be prepared to have reader’s advisory conversations with customers
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with library colleagues, community partners, and the general public.
  • The candidate should have the physical capabilities to push a loaded book cart weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; and use manual office tools and supplies. 
  • In addition, an employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

  • High School diploma 
  • Two years of customer service experience including handling queries and providing assistance both over the phone and in person.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. 
  • Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • Two years of library experience including shelving, sorting, technology skills, customer service, and use of an integrated library system.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
