JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE: Library Assistant - High School

DATE: August 2025

QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate with post-secondary education and/or experience in areas related to the listed performance responsibilities.

REPORTS TO: Teacher Librarian

JOB GOAL: Provide clerical and technical skills in the areas of circulation, processing, computer operation, maintenance and inventory. 

 

CIRCULATION

  1. Assist students and faculty at circulation desk
  2. Supervise student checkout/renew books for students as needed
  3. Enter and edit holds for students and teachers as needed
  4. Check in material from students and staff
  5. Follow up on overdue materials
  6. Generate Emails for over dues
  7. Remind students verbally as needed
  8. Maintenance for lost materials
  9. Update catalog with lost materials
  10. Prepare bills/invoices as needed for lost or damaged materials
  11. Keep accurate records on lost or damaged materials
  12. Issue refunds when necessary
  13. Assemble bibliography reports from Librarian as requested
  14. Assist with lost/damaged book reports
  15. Assist in budgeting/cataloguing of materials

PROCESSING SERVICES

  1. Process new books for shelf use
  2. Apply barcodes, spine labels, and protectors as needed
  3. Laminate dust covers or plastic coat for paperbacks as needed
  4. Stamp book with district and school ID stamps

TECHNICAL SERVICES

  1. Assist students and teachers in use of computer and other equipment
  2. Help supervise and assist with computer use as needed
  3. Assist students with Destiny catalog, Google Doc issues, etc.
  4. Make minor repairs (trouble-shoot malfunctions/problems)
  5. Contact Belmont for special supplies or devices (cords, plugs, headsets, etc)
  6. Assist students and teachers with materials selections and location
  7. Repair old or damaged material as needed
  8. Advise Librarian on status of library supplies and repairs
  9. Create displays around the library
  10. Assist staff in ordering/circulation of AEA materials

LIBRARY MAINTENANCE

  1. Shelf maintenance
  2. Straighten books on shelves
  3. Organize shelves according to call numbers
  4. Display books as necessary
  5. Shelf read periodically to ensure the organization of the shelves
  6. Clean and dust equipment and furniture as needed
  7. Perform general room maintenance

INVENTORY

  1. Complete annual inventory/Assist with weeding
  2. Scan books by sections of the library to make an account of all books
  3. Mark or withdraw lost/damaged materials
  4. Compare computer list with books on shelves
  5. Make suggestions for weeding/new acquisitions
  6. Repair materials as necessary

 

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and work year assigned according to the Letter of Assignment.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the building level administrator.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   Medium Work - lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently or up to 10 lbs. constantly.  Stooping and kneeling occasionally.  Reaching, talking, and hearing frequently.  Must be able to remain mobile throughout the work day.
