The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the university library and provides direct service to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. This position plays a vital role in ensuring that library resources and services are accessible, organized, and welcoming. The Library Assistant assists patrons in locating and using materials, provides basic research and technology support, and contributes to maintaining an environment that promotes academic success and lifelong learning.


Responsibilities

  • Provide courteous and professional customer service at service desks, assisting patrons with circulation, reference, and general inquiries.
  • Assist students, faculty, and patrons in locating materials, navigating electronic resources, and using library equipment.
  • Circulate materials by checking items in and out, renewing loans, processing holds, and managing overdue notices.
  • Support collection management by shelving books, shelf-reading for accuracy, and assisting with inventory projects.
  • Process new library materials, including labeling, covering, and preparing items for circulation.
  • Troubleshoot basic computer, printer, and copier issues and assist patrons with software applications such as Microsoft Office and internet searches.
  • Monitor library spaces to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment; report facility or equipment issues promptly.
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures, ensuring security of library facilities and resources.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support, including answering telephones, filing, and maintaining records as needed.


Education

  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, especially in Library Science, Education, or a related field.
  • Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
