Description

The Library Assistant (Part-Time) supports the daily operations of the library by providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors during evening hours. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with locating library materials and resources, circulating library items, maintaining library records, shelving, and organizing materials, monitoring study areas, supporting basic technology and computer use, and assisting with special projects and programs as assigned. The position requires strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills, as well as the ability to work independently in a professional academic environment while supporting the library's mission of promoting learning, research, and access to information.

Essential Functions:

  • Act as Library Assistant for the designated campus, and assist the Library Director, and Associate Director in performance of duties, including providing access to library holdings, interacting with instructors and students to promote effective use of the library, assisting in maintaining the campus library catalog, and assisting in performing circulation procedures
  • Respond promptly to daily communications via email and voicemail, addressing inquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the University's mission, policies, procedures, ethical standards, compliance with data protection regulations and pertinent legal regulations in all aspects of admission activities.
  • Participate in Commencement Exercises, new student orientation, university events, committees, self-studies, and University Commencement Ceremonies
  • Special Projects: Execute special projects assigned by the supervisor
  • Ensure compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, as well as FMU Policies, Procedures, Rules and Regulation, the FMIJ Code of Ethics, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Florida Information Protection Act of 2014 (FIPA), and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Understands and complies with the library procedures and policies manual
  • Assists the campus librarian in maintaining the catalog
  • Performs copy cataloging using Florida Group Catalog and Library of Congress data            
  • Helps campus library patrons
  • Participates in annual inventory of printed and non-printed material
  • Assists the campus librarian in providing library orientation, and instruction in library skills for the faculty and students
  • Assists in training of student workers
  • Assists the librarian in control of circulation of campus library materials and equipment to students and faculty
  • Assists the librarian in the recovery of all overdue material
  • Assists librarians in processing of new acquisitions
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues and supporting the smooth operation of the office.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Clear verbal communication to interact with visitors, colleagues, and callers, as well as strong written communication for emails and messages
  • Being friendly, approachable, and able to make guests feel welcome and comfortable
  • Providing excellent service to visitors and callers, addressing inquiries and concerns courteously and professionally
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, email, and spreadsheets, as well as familiarity with office equipment like printers and scanners
  • Managing multiple tasks efficiently, ensuring accuracy in tasks like data entry, message taking, and document processing
  • Ability to handle unexpected situations calmly and find solutions effectively
  • Maintaining discretion and handling sensitive information with care
  • Must be able to operate standard office equipment, lift and carry books up to 10/20 pounds on a regular basis, move heavy book trucks, stoop, bend and walk to assist customers with finding library material
  • Excellent customer service skills and computer experience required, including knowledge of internet resources, electronic databases, standard software, and Web 2.0 resources

Minimum Requirements: 

  • At minimum, an Associates Degree 
  • Be able to work evenings and weekends
