Starting salary for this position is $61,203.

Are you a librarian who loves National Parks? If so, we encourage your application to join our professional staff as a full-time Librarian for Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis, Missouri. As part of the cultural resources team, you will play a key role in running the park library in a beautiful space in the newly restored Old Courthouse and running the SharePoint site for the division. You will have the opportunity to work with park staff, researchers and the public making use of the park’s resources. The park’s interpretive themes are broad including westward expansion, Dred and Harriet Scott’s fight for freedom, the creation of the national park site and construction of the Gateway Arch Monument – all reflected by the books and journals in the park’s library. The librarian will also be the point person coordinating a monthly speaker series at the Old Courthouse and work with park interpreters to assist during park events. The Librarian is employed by Jefferson National Parks Association, the longstanding, non-profit educational partner of Gateway Arch National Park. This is not a position with the federal government. FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

 Administers Library Collections:

  • Manages library collections following detailed standard National Park Service (NPS) guidelines: working with supervisor to define the scope of the collection the librarian will acquire new books as needed, refine existing library collection, implement library operating procedures regarding circulation, collection access, hours of operation, making long range plans for collection development, continuation or suspension of journal subscriptions as needed for the support of park interpretive goals. 
  • Organizes the collections and reference spaces. Monitors, controls and maintains the environment for the library collection including light, temperature, humidity and air quality working with park maintenance division to meet professional baseline standards.
  • Assists with the development and monitoring of programs for use of the collections, including research, loans, reference services, enforcement of use policy and evaluation of research requests. 
  • Serves on the park and partner’s monthly speaker series committee as primary event coordinator, coordinates speaker logistics, and provides in-person event oversight (including weekend hours). 

 Works with Researchers, and the General Public:

  • Works with researchers from both inside and outside the park to facilitate their research. Sets up policies for research in collections and monitors researchers while in the facility. Answers reference questions via email, telephone, and mail. Keeps track of usage of collections. Works with curator to write library policies and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage and facilitate cooperation. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for the purpose of exchanging information. Attends National Park Service trainings and meetings to facilitate work within the service and cooperation within the agency. 
  • Supervises interns and volunteers. Maintains relationships with local educational institutions and creates educational opportunities for students to assist with park goals while learning about the profession. 

 Communicates Effectively both Orally and in Writing:

  • May represent park on NPS regional or national task groups or similar organizations. 
  • Makes presentations about the park and the library collections in the park and to local groups. 
  • Creates social media and website updates to inform the public about library collections and park history. 

 Serves as Member of Interpretation Division:

  • Serves as primary administrator of the division SharePoint site, coordinating the sharing of information and resources and organizing and designing the site for optimal ease of use by all members of the division. 
  • Assists in the general visitor services program of the park when called upon. As appropriate, develops interpretive and educational programming using the library resources. 
  • Assists with the management of park museum collection under the direction of the curator. Works with curator to prepare annual reports for library collections and annual inventory.
  • Serves on park committees as needed. 
  • Develops grant proposals in conjunction with park partners. 

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS

The work requires frequent retrieval of books from shelves with some bending and lifting of resources (weighing up to 50 pounds). Operation of standard office equipment. Operation of motor vehicles. Library work can be sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate for extended periods.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION

Education and Experience: Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution; or a degree in a related field with a minimum of five years’ experience administering a library collection.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal Classification System and/or Library of Congress Classification System; professional library metadata standards for bibliographic description and name and subject authorities, such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (current edition), USMARC format, Library of Congress Name Authorities, Library of Congress Subject Heading List, and other discipline specific, standardized thesauri. | Experience working in a library with researchers, conducting research and answering reference questions. | Experience working with sharing library or historical materials via the internet and social media. Proficient in using social media. | Advanced proficiency in SharePoint administration. | Experience making public presentations and desire to make presentations both internal and external to educate about library materials and research.
