Do you believe the library can be a cornerstone of growth and discovery? Warren-Newport Public Library District is looking for a Youth Services Librarian to connect with young people and foster their love of learning and exploration.


 As a full-time Youth Services Librarian for Warren-Newport Public Library making between $24.67-$30.84 per hour (DOQ), you'll work an average of 37.5 hours per week with the schedule being Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and one Saturday shift per month. Saturday hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday shifts are optional. Our Sunday hours are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Sunday hours are from Labor Day to Memorial Day and are paid at time and half).


This role involves curating collections, offering reference services, collaborating with the community, and supporting library staff. Some of your responsibilities will be to:  

  • Curate and maintain diverse and inclusive collections of materials for children, aligning with library goals and community needs.
  • Assist patrons of all ages with selecting, organizing, and understanding library materials.
  • Provide instruction on using online services, catalogs, and basic reference tools.
  • Offer expert assistance to staff with complex reference, readers' advisory, and library policy questions.
  • Perform service desk functions such as placing holds, initiating interlibrary loans, and registering patrons for events.
  • Interpret library policy in the absence of the department head.
  • Participate in evaluating youth collections, programs, and services.
  • Serve as Designated Lead when necessary.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment issues (computers, copiers, etc.).

Requirements

To thrive in this role, you'll need:

  • A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school
  • Strong knowledge of library resources, collection development principles, and emerging technologies
  • A proven track record of working effectively with children and their families
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with library automation systems and technology
