Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 6 PM and various event hours.  This employee must be able to work the hours required, including assigned weekends.

About the Role

As the Youth Services Librarian, you will be responsible for planning and implementing dynamic and engaging programs for children, teens, and families. This includes Storytimes, afterschool programs, bilingual/multicultural programs, and the Summer Reading Program. You will manage the branch's youth materials collection and promote library services through outreach to schools, parent groups, daycare providers, and community organizations.

In addition to programming, you will assist with customer service, collection development, technology assistance, and other library functions. The Youth Services Librarian may also be expected to assume responsibility for the operation of the branch in the absence of the branch manager and/or site supervisor and will assist with other library functions including customer service, technology assistance, collection development and maintenance, and reader's advisory. This position includes the responsibility of opening and closing the facility on specified days, nights, and weekends; and includes ensuring that the library environment is conducive for excellent customer service (i.e. reporting equipment problems, leaks, outages, etc. to Manager or supervisor). The Youth Services Librarian is to carry out library and city policies and procedures, i.e. circulation and registration, computer use, cash handling, and behavior guidelines. Must have strong written communication skills.  Candidates must be able to provide general information and reference services in person, phone or email.

The Youth Services Librarian position will be assigned to the Vance Chavis Branch, but Greensboro Public Library reserves the right to transfer employees to other library locations as required by service needs. Employees of the City of Greensboro are expected to perform all duties listed in their position descriptions, as well as other related duties as assigned, according to the City’s four core values of honesty, integrity, stewardship, and respect. The physical duties of the job include standing, walking, reaching, stooping, climbing, lifting, or pushing approximately 40 lbs. This employee must be able to work the hours required including assigned weekends.

This job is Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Qualifications

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree with 1 to 3 years of experience in the specialty focus area of children and/or teens
  • “OR” Bachelor's degree with 5 to 7 years of experience in the specialty focus area of children and/or teens
  • 2+ years of library programming experience
  • Experienced using Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS)
  • Experience in storytelling, drama, or public performance.
  • Experience in publicity and promotion.
  • 2+ years of increasingly responsible experience working in library science field.
