Youth Services Librarian

Responsible for all aspects of library services to children and young adults, under the general supervision of the Library Director. Develops appropriate collection of library materials for children and young adults; plans and coordinates programs and events for children and young adults including annual Summer Reading Program and weekly storytimes. Assumes full responsibility of library in absence of Library Director.

Essential Job Duties:

Following City and Department policies and procedures and the instructions of his or her supervisor, the Youth Services Librarian must be able to perform the following essential job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Open, operate and close the library with the appropriate procedures and tasks including but not limited to functionality of library automation system (Biblionix/Apollo) and computer time-management system (CASSIE); lights; all ink services machines; computers and network; daily cash reconciliation; Wi-Fi signal; City management; book drop collection; check-in of materials; end-of-day collection of materials; bathroom checks and security.
2. Maintain all hardware, software, and networks within the building including but not limited to light bulbs; break room equipment; mechanical room equipment; electrical breakers; courtyard; flags; computers; printers; and all other equipment.
3. Assist with city budget preparation and annual report for state library.
4. Collection Development activities including but not limited to assisting with policy development; circulation/weeding reports; weeding; inventory; and materials recovery.
5. Facilitate programming for children, young adults as necessary.
6. Analyze patrons' requests to determine needed information, and assist in furnishing or locating that information.
7. Search standard reference materials, including online sources and the Internet, to answer patrons' reference questions.
8. Assist patrons with technology needs including computer help, cellphone and tablet assistance, email account set up.
9. Maintain regular presence on the library floor as a resource for general reference questions, and overall daily activity of the library.
10. Stay current and earn continuing education hours annually.
11. Work some evenings, weekends, and special events as necessary; work overtime and attend meetings when required.
12. Punctual, regular, on-site, in-person attendance is a requirement of the job.
13. Use good judgment and make good decisions in matters related to the job.
14. Follow City and Department policies and procedures and the instructions of supervisors.
15. Be helpful, cooperative and courteous, and demonstrate a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others.
16. Demonstrate initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties, whether or not listed in this Job Description.
17. Safeguard City property and recognize and report needed repairs.
18. Work safely, follow safety rules and training, and maintain a clean, safe and healthful working environment.
19. Maintain confidentiality with regard to all City business.
20. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Basic Requirements:

1. Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school.
2. Three years of increasingly responsible, professional library experience including experience in a youth services department.
3. Basic understanding of standards of public librarianship as provided by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the American Library Association.
4. Successfully pass background and credit checks and pre-employment physical/medical exam.
5. Possess and maintain a valid operator’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
2. Ability to manage and execute multiple projects, tasks, and areas of library work to fulfill short- and long-term goals in public and technical services and programs.
3. Positive attitude and good interpersonal skills and the ability to get along well with coworkers, the public and others.
4. Knowledge of how to conduct a storytime using songs, fingerplays, action rhymes, puppets, etc.
5. Knowledge of current trends in library service to children and young adults.
6. Ability to work with children, young adults, and their parents and/or caregivers.
7. Ability to use Biblionix/Apollo ILS, Tyler Technologies software such as Incode and Paylocity.
8. Proficient in Microsoft Word, preferably Excel, email; social media applications; website maintenance; research databases provided by TexShare; internet/web navigation/mobile application awareness; and knowledgeable in automated systems.
9. Ability to create and present programming for children and young adults on reading, crafts, music, and other activities that foster literacy, learning, and engagement with library materials.
10. Ability to speak and write with precision and accuracy, catalog books with precision following current AACR2 rules, and the accurate creation and maintenance of patron records.
11. Knowledge of copyright and related laws and regulations.
12. Ability to follow all department policies and procedures and supervisors’ directions.
13. Good judgment and the ability to make good decisions, solve problems and assist coworkers and others with solutions to problems; ability to de-escalate confrontational patrons and transform potential conflicts into future good will.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

In order to successfully achieve the goals of the library, the Youth Services Librarian must meet the following physical and mental requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. The ability to understand, learn, remember and communicate information about the job.
2. The ability to understand the meaning of and use and speak words understandably and effectively in the English language.
3. Good hearing and listening abilities, that is, the Youth Services Librarian must be able to hear spoken words from patrons, co-workers, supervisors and others.
4. Good motor coordination skills, that is, the Library Director must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands and fingers rapidly and accurately in order to handle precise movements such as typing and in response to visual, auditory and other stimuli.
5. Make and use repetitive hand motions over an extended period, as when typing.
6. Sit, stand, move around, bend, reach, stretch, push and pull and remain upright for extended periods of time.
7. Be able to lift or move objects weighing as much as fifteen (15) pounds. The activities and the approximate amounts of time required per day for each are shown below.
