    YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
     

     

    SUMMARY OF POSITION:

     

    Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, plans and presents programs for children, young adults, and families; provides reference and reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages;
    maintains knowledge of children’s services including children’s literature and young adult literature; assists with collection development in assigned area(s), creates promotional materials for children’s and young adult events; performs public service and other library duties as needed.
     

     

    EXAMPLES OF WORK:

     
    • Provides library services for children and young adults which includes, but is not limited to, planning, coordinating and implementing children’s and young adult programs for a diverse multicultural population; coordinating publicity about children’s and young adult library programs and services; maintaining a positive presence in the community by providing outreach services; soliciting funds for programs through budget requests, grants and gifts from library support groups and community organizations; and monitoring expenditures of program funds;
    • Assists the Youth Services Manager in developing and maintaining the juvenile and young adult print and multimedia collections and electronic resources which includes, but is not limited to, evaluating existing collections and online services, analyzing community needs, and suggesting appropriate materials and electronic resources for purchase;
    • Assists in formulating library goals and objectives for services to children and young adults; creates graphics and promotional materials, including but not limited to flyers, brochures, advertisements, signage, and web pages; collaborates on updates to the children and teen sections of the library web page; and promotes library programs and events using social media;
    • Responsible for the completion of daily supervisory operations which include, but are not limited to, opening and closing the library, processing daily reserve and overdue reports, reconciling money drawers, preparing daily revenue reports, revising daily desk schedule, issuing electronic library cards and billing customer accounts.
    • Manages the library’s electronic correspondence received through multiple channels including
    • email accounts, text and chat services, and social media platforms.
    • Responsible for preparing weekly cash deposits submitted to Finance and ensuring appropriate line-item accounts are credited; reporting statistics to the appropriate departments and institutions; organizing files following City records management guidelines.
    • Troubleshoots equipment and software, reports issues to IT personnel and service providers and conducts follow up.
    • Provides quality customer service; answers questions regarding library collection and services; assists with electronic resources; provides reader’s advisory and reference research assistance; provides instruction on the use of library equipment and technology; enforces library policies and procedures.
     
    Other Important Duties:
    • This position requires evening and weekend work, with a regular work week of Tuesday-Saturday.
    • Performs general circulation duties and collects payment for library services and fees using the Point of Sale (POS) system.
    • Performs such other duties as may be assigned; and Observes all safety rules and procedures.
     

    ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

     

    --Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program with coursework in children’s literature or young adult literature, and/or services to children or young adults.
     
    --Proficiency in graphic design and graphic design software applications. Library experience preferred. Bilingual preferred.
     

     

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

     

    Valid Texas Driver’s License.
