Purpose of Position

The Music Library Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the UND Gordon Erickson Music Library. This position is dedicated to providing excellent public services in the Music Library which holds scores, books, and recordings in support of the Music Department study, teaching, performing and research activities. They will collaborate with librarians at the Chester Fritz Library as well as Music Department faculty and staff to achieve sufficient access to materials and services. They will supervise library student employees to provide sufficient coverage and assign special projects as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the UND Music Library. 
    • Under the direction of the Fine Arts Librarian/Coordinator of Ask Us & Reference manage day to day operations of the branch library 
    • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the Music department and Chester Fritz Library. 
    • Support strong communication between the Fine Arts Librarian and Music Department stakeholders, including Music Department Liaison, Department Chair, and faculty. 
    • Create and prioritize expectations for a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and the broader community 
    • Participate in planning, developing, and formulating services necessary to accomplish goals. 
    • Proactively and collaboratively assess and implement services. 
    • Collaborate with CFL colleagues and the Music department faculty to identify technologies for in-library use and loan. 
    • Coordinate with Interlibrary Loan (ILL) colleagues in CFL to support ILL lending and borrowing 
    • Implement safety and security practices 
    • Request supplies and equipment. 
    • Evaluate services and report results to CFL 
    • Maintain necessary operational statistics and records. 
    • As appropriate, represent the branch in meetings, programs, and presentations. 
    • Participating in Library committees 
  • Provide excellent public services in the Music Library 
    • Assist users to access and use library resources. 
    • Create an excellent service environment and prioritize customer service and experiences 
    • Provide walk-in instruction to library users 
    • Answer questions received in person, by telephone, or digitally. 
    • Direct patrons to the Fine Arts Librarian for class instruction and research consultations. 
    • Conduct instructional tours in coordination with the Fine Arts Librarian
  • Collections acquisition, maintenance and access 
    • Maintain the music collections in collaboration with the Fine Arts Librarian, Head of Collection Strategies, and other stakeholders 
    • Implement practices to support convenient access to collections and technology 
    • Place holds and recalls for materials. 
    • Update patron records as needed. 
    • Maintain reserve collections in collaboration with the Fine Arts Librarian 
    • Assist Fine Arts Librarian in Collection Development activities 
    • Collaborate with the Fine Arts Librarian, Head of Collection Strategies, and acquisitions colleagues to acquire materials.
    • Coordinate with CFL colleagues on collections maintenance, including repairs and binding 
  • Supervise student employees 
    • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all student employees in coordination with CFL Ask Us department for consistency of library services 
    • Assign routine tasks and special projects, including digitization of collections 
    • Schedule hours. 
    • Provide mentoring and workplace skills development for student employees 
    • Resolve employee conflicts.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience combination for a bachelor’s degree
  • 3 years of experience in an academic, public, or school library
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent professional degree for library and information professionals
  • Experience in a music library or a combination of education and experience that equips the candidate to manage day-to-day operations in a music branch library
  • Customer service experience
