POSITION SUMMARY

Smithfield City is currently hiring a Teen Services Librarian. If you love books, creating meaningful programming for teens, and helping the public, this job is right for you! We are looking for a dynamic candidate who is at least 18 years of age, with a high school diploma, who is creative and excited about creating and organizing programs for teens and providing general library services to our patrons. This is a part-time position working 22-26 hours a week, evenings, and weekends.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES  

1.       Creates, organizes, prepares, and carries out programs for teens.

2.       Collaborates and works well with a team to carry out and support all library programming.

3.       Creates online and in-library promotional materials for all teen programs.

4.       Performs general and routine duties related to the sorting, shelving, and re-shelving of library collection materials,                         including books, magazines, newspapers, audio-visual materials, etc.

5.       Operates computers to enter and update book records.

6.       Identifies patron status in relation to obligations, i.e., fines, and communicates the same to patrons.

7.       May assist the public with photocopying, printing, scanning and basic computer usage.

8.       Provide general assistance to patrons by directing them to various locations in the library as needed to locate certain                    types of collection materials and books.

9.       Assures proper labeling of collection items.

10.     Makes recommendations to mend, bind, or discard library materials.

11.     Performs general cleaning.

12.     Performs related duties as required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  •        High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND BILITIES

 

Knowledge:

  •        Some knowledge of library processes and procedures
  •        Dewey Decimal System and other library organization
  •        Some knowledge of Canva and graphic design principles
  •        Knowledge of teen/young adult literature and trends is helpful

 

Skills:

  •         Interpersonal communication skills
  •         Basic computer operations skills

 

Abilities:

  •         Ability to perform general clerical functions quickly and accurately.
  •         Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently in carrying out work assignments.
  •         Ability to lead large or small groups of children, youth, or adults.
  •         Ability to operate various office machines and equipment.
  •         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and patrons of all ages.
  •         Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and distance vision. The employee will occasionally be required to attend off-site meetings.

The noise level is usually quiet in this work environment.
