Position Summary: 

The Student Employee-Library Assistant will meet academic and professional qualifications, work with discretion and confidentiality, demonstrate dedication to academic excellence and student-centered education, and support the mission and objectives of Bay Mills Community College. This position is part-time (up to 20 hours per week) with an hourly wage of $14.00. This position qualifies as Federal Work Study (FWS) community service as it provides services designed to improve the quality of life for community residents and supports educational and community needs.  This position also meets FWS literacy requirements by providing support for reading, writing, basic academic skills, and family literacy activities for pre-school through adult learners.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Duties support reading, writing, or basic academic skills.
  • The student will help individuals use books, reading materials, or library resources.
  • The student assists with family literacy or communication literacy-related activities.
  • The work benefits preschool through adult learners (not just BMCC students).
  • Communicate with and assist all library guests. 
  • Utilize basic computer functions for circulation and basic cataloging. 
  • Assist in maintaining a well-organized library by shelving, reorganizing, and keeping a neat workspace. 
  • Assist in ordering, circulation, and packaging of Inter-Library Loan books. 
  • Assist with ACCUPLACER placement testing, scheduling, and giving tests for online and/or on-campus students. 
  • Communicate with staff, faculty, administration, prospective and continuing students, as well as all other guests. 
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and/or in a group setting with library guests. 
  • Assists with other duties as assigned. 
  • Position may include weekends and evening shifts. 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills . 
  • Excellent guest service skills . 
  • Excellent computer application skills to include Microsoft Office and recording software. 
  • Working knowledge or ability to learn office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and printers.   
  • Respect for the confidentiality of all information received. 
  • Demonstrated personal integrity, sound judgement, and dependability. 
  • Professional demeanor while representing BMCC.


Student Employment Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a degree-seeking student at Bay Mills Community College.
  • Must have Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined in BMCC’s Student Handbook:
    • Grade Point Average of 2.0 (cumulative).
    • Completion of 67% of credits attempted at BMCC on a cumulative basis.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credits for the semester the paid internship/FWS will be awarded.
  • Must have attendance of 70% or higher in all classes.
  • Must be eligible for FWS funding.
  • Eligibility requirements must be met at the beginning of each semester.
