Working with the Library’s Collection Development team, this position will be responsible for selecting and managing the adult non-fiction, fiction, and audio-visual collections in physical and digital formats for the Garland Public Libraries. This position may also occasionally provide programs, reference assistance, readers’ advisory, and library services to the Garland community.
As a Senior Librarian, this position may serve as the non-supervisory, lead librarian for the Central Library or branch library, interpreting and enforcing library policies when the manager or other supervisor/lead is not present. The position may also work at other Garland Library locations as needed.
Pay Range: $47,923.20 - 61,058.40 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Work Schedule: Includes nights and weekends, with some changes to the regular schedule required to occasionally participate in programming and outreach events.
Monitor trends in adult literature and evaluate community demographics.
Identify collections that need development and replacement.
Utilize professional sources to select and purchase appropriate materials for specified collections.
Place orders and provide recommendations for proper placement in specified collections.
Consult with Managers and Adult Services Librarians to determine local patron requests.
Maintain retrospective quality of collections.
Identify gaps in collection and order to fill as appropriate.
Provide reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons.
Promptly review and respond to purchase requests.
Communicate with vendors regarding products and services.
Budget for collection spending accounts, to include monitoring accounts, responsibly spending annual allocations, and recommending future budget levels for selection areas, providing rationale for changes from current spending.
Maintain collections to include assisting staff with weeding by providing lists, data and advice as needed.
Assist patrons in the use of public computers and related software, the catalog, Internet, and print management system.
On occasion, plan, develop, and present programs of popular interest to the public, as well as evaluate programming and activities.
Participate in day-to-day library operations including, but not limited to, opening and closing routines, and banking/cash handling procedures.
Supervise library operations, including facility and public service operations, in the absence of the supervisor or manager.

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university
3 years’ professional library experience
Experience in selecting materials for adults
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
3-5 years’ experience as a professional Librarian, with 2 or more years’ experience selecting for adult collections, with primary responsibility for all, or a major part of the library collection
Experience working in a public library

Extensive knowledge of adult literature, including popular reading, research and reference materials, fiction and non-fiction in print, media, and digital formats
Extensive knowledge of core materials necessary to develop a popular, well-used collection
Knowledge of the science of reading and the ability to apply the knowledge to selection duties
Considerable knowledge of current practices in public libraries Ability to organize and lead others
Ability to prepare and analyze data and figures, view a computer monitor, perform extensive reading, operate a vehicle, and maintain equipment/work area appropriately
