POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Library Services, provides leadership, management, direction, oversight for all aspects of Special Collections and Archives. Responsible for formulating policies and goals for the administration of the department, and the supervision of Special Collections and Archives staff, student workers, and volunteers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Administers the operation, function, and services of Special Collections
- Engages in collection development and management in accord with current Collection Development policies
- Secures outside funding through gifts and grants
- Prepares reports, bibliographies, brochures, and press releases
- Assists with the supervision of the Special Collections Reading Room
- Answers reference questions via email, phone, and in-person
- Provides instructional sessions for faculty/staff and students
- Attends and participates in outside workshops and meetings
- Gives lectures on the department and its collections
- Prepares and/or assists with displays, library programs, and community projects
- Engages in research and writing
- Maintain collections ensuring they are preserved, organized, and properly housed
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent knowledge of African and African American history and culture resources and best practices
- Facilitate discovery and access to collection information through the development of EAD finding aids, the library website, and ArchivesSpace
- Applies relevant national and international bibliographic control standards (AACRII, MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, etc.)
- Plans and implements new technologies in areas of resource management
- Reads and interprets bibliographic records
- Applies library materials selection theory and tools
- Demonstrates strong commitment to patron services
- Maintains ability to work independently and with teams
- Maintains knowledge of currently library trends and innovations, especially those relating to bibliographic control and resource management
