POSITION SUMMARY: 

This is a professional supervisory position that performs highly complex library work and provides library services to the population through programming, outreach, reference services and collection development; performs other specialized duties as assigned. This position works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Position may carry out responsibilities in the following functional areas: Adult Services, Youth Services, and Virtual Services. This may be filled as a Librarian or Senior Librarian.

This position is a Senior Level position that will oversee Adult Library Services and supervise 5 employees directly. Qualified candidates should have three years of library experience or 1 year in a lead librarian role. Additionally, 1 year of supervisory experience is preferred. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Establishes goals, objectives, priorities, programs, procedures and work standards for areas of responsibility; creates documentation in relation to work; participates in compiling statistical data and in developing and updating library policies and procedures as required.

• Develops onboarding and training materials and provides instruction to library employees.

• Uses in-depth knowledge of library resources and research methods to provide reference and readers advisory services; assists patrons in locating and utilizing all of the library’s services and collections; responds to patron requests for information; addresses and facilitates the timely resolution of patron concerns and complaints.

• Provides input in the preparation of the annual budget; attends library meetings, workshops, conferences, committee meetings, community meetings, and City of Schertz meetings as required.

• Evaluates and orders materials and supplies in areas of responsibility; has responsibility for city-issued credit card.

• Promotes reading and markets library services and resources by preparing publicity fliers, press releases, articles, presentations and content for the library’s calendars, web pages and social media accounts; develops and coordinates outreach efforts for library services; advocates the library’s role in the community by attending or participating in appropriate civic, school and community activities; leads library tours or presents programs in-house and in the community as requested.

• Assists management in creating a positive work environment where teamwork is recognized as a critical component in the development of an effective and motivated workforce, and where the City of Schertz core values are upheld.

• Participates in continuing education; keeps informed about the latest trends that impact public libraries and finds creative ways to adapt those trends if appropriate to the Schertz Public Library.

• Staffs the information desks and assists patrons in the use of public computers, online catalogs, library databases and library equipment; assigns internet computers to patrons; assists patrons with printing and photocopying; troubleshoots basic computer, printer and photocopying equipment problems that arise.

• Assists as needed with circulation duties.

• Participates as needed in opening and closing duties.

• Operates, maintains and troubleshoots a variety of library and office equipment.

• May perform original MARC cataloging or copy cataloging work in areas of responsibility.

• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Examples of tasks by functional area may include, but are not limited to:

ADULT SERVICES:

• Responsible for the overall management of the library’s services and programming for adults (aged 18+).

• Develops and conducts classes and programs on topics of interest to the library’s adult customers; coordinates with outside community groups, library professional organizations, businesses and individuals to provide specialized programs.

• Responsible for collection development and management activities; reviews, selects, purchases, and de-accessions library materials for the adult collections, evaluates patron requests and donated items to determine appropriateness for library collection.

SENIOR LIBRARIAN REQUIREMENTS

• Master’s degree in Library or Information Science (MLS/MLIS/MIS/MSIS) from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association.

• Minimum three (3) years library experience or one (1) year of lead librarian or increasingly responsible library experience; public library experience preferred; staff supervisory experience strongly preferred.

• Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.

• In addition to the Essential Duties & Responsibilities and required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities above, must be able to perform the following:

o Performs the full range of supervisory functions including employee interviewing, selection, training, evaluating, counseling, developing and disciplining employees.

o Prepares staff work schedules, approves leave requests and assists in finding supplemental work coverage as needed.

o Participates as a member of the library’s management team, including developing and implementing library policies and procedures.

o Assumes responsibility for library operation in the absence of the director and performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Master’s degree in Library or Information Science (MLS/MLIS/MIS/MSIS) from a graduate library program accredited by the American Library Association.

• Proficient use of personal computers and associated software, Internet and web resources.

• One (1) year library experience preferred.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License
