The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by the incumbent in the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
• Perform a variety of technical clerical functions in support of supplemental programs and activities at an elementary school library involved with the selection, acquisition, circulation, maintenance and distribution of books, instructional materials, audio visual materials and equipment. E
• Assist students and teachers with selecting and locating books, periodicals, articles and other media materials; maintain library schedules for teachers. E
• Assist in the selection and ordering of library books and other media material for the library based on identified regular and supplemental curriculum needs; receive recommendations for new book selections from teachers and staff; prepare materials for supplemental instructional activities; research publishers for best prices; type purchase requisitions and track orders. E
• Instruct and assist students in the use of the card catalog; assist individuals and groups of students in the use of basic reference sources in finding and selecting materials. E
• Select and read books aloud to classes to promote interest in reading. E
• Process new library materials; stamp and prepare check out cards, pockets and labels; issue bar codes and maintain related records. E
• Coordinate circulation of library materials; check library materials in and out to students and staff. E
• Operate a variety of library/media center equipment, including typewriter, VCR, tape and duplicating equipment, bar code reader and projectors. E
• Operate a computer to maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; track the return or payment for lost materials; collect fines and payments for overdue and lost items; prepare receipts; maintain appropriate files and records. E
• Operate a computer to obtain access to the Internet for reference information for students. E
• Maintain discipline and order in the library; enforce discipline procedures according to established guidelines. E
• Design and prepare appropriate library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards; maintain a clean and orderly library environment. E
• Mend, repair and maintain damaged library materials; select, prepare and record materials to be rebound, repaired or discarded. E
• Train and oversee the work of student aides and parent volunteers.
• Assist with inventory of library materials.
