We are seeking a dynamic, joyful School Librarian for grades K-3 to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the library program is an integral part of the instructional program of the school and supports The Dalton Plan. The Dalton School Libraries are committed to an inclusive library environment and strive to provide a community space where all students, faculty, staff, alumni and families feel welcome and valued. 

As one of two First Program librarians, the librarian in this position will collaborate closely on all aspects of managing the FP school library described below, as well as work with the middle and high school librarians on specific projects and K-12 initiatives.  Under the leadership of the Director of Libraries, our team also includes two high school librarians, two middle school librarians, a MS/HS library assistant, a technical administrator, and professionals in the museum program and school archives. 

Roles and Responsibilities:

Leader

As a leader, the school librarian creates an environment where collaboration and creative problem solving thrive. The school librarian is an excellent communicator who instills enthusiasm in others by making them feel that they are important members of a team. Strong leaders foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and openness to new ideas, welcoming and encouraging input from others and they take an active role in the school community. 

Instructional Partner

As an instructional partner, the school librarian works with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources. The school librarian participates in the curriculum development process and collaborates with teachers and students to design and teach engaging learning experiences that incorporate multiple literacies, foster critical thinking and promote a love of reading. 

Information Specialist 

As information specialist, the school librarian provides leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources in all formats, as well as expertise in the ethical use of information. The school librarian ensures equitable access and selects materials that represent diverse perspectives and needs of students, staff and Dalton Community.

Teacher 

As a teacher, the school librarian empowers students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. The school librarian supports students’ success by guiding them in reading for understanding, for exposure to diversity of viewpoints, and for personal interests and in working with peers in successful collaboration for learning. The school librarian champions equity and inclusion and fosters an environment that encourages exploration, risk-taking and a growth mindset. 

Program Administrator

As program administrator, the school librarian works collaboratively with members of the learning community to define the policies of the school library program, and to guide and direct all activities related to it. The school librarian creates and maintains a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and conducive to student learning.

 Qualifications:

  • Masters of Library/Information Sciences with a concentration in School Librarianship from accredited program preferred.
  • Previous experience in a school library preferred.
  • Teaching certification preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff to plan, develop, and implement a high level of student services and programs.
  • Ability to teach and promote information literacy and the school library program.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

 Knowledge of:

  • Information literacy skills for children, 
  • Stages of child development and developmentally appropriate teaching strategies, 
  • Print (books, magazines, etc.) and non-print (e-books, audio collections, DVD’s, etc.) collection development for children,
  • Follett Destiny,
  • Information technology,
  • Research methodology, and
  • Library programming and services for children.
