Primary Function:  Primarily responsible for providing general reference services to all students, faculty, and staff and formal library instruction to students during the evening and at several Bellevue University locations. Works closely with the Public Services Librarian, Reference/Instruction Librarians, and the Reference Support Specialists to ensure all students’ needs are met. 

 

Essential Functions:

 

Library Instruction 

  • Conducts formal library instruction sessions during the evening (and weekends as needed) on campus and at several Bellevue University locations, and travels to off-site locations when needed.
  • Develops and conducts various workshops and programs for faculty, staff, and students at least twice/year.
  • Maintains, adds, and edits the online “Library Research” tutorials.
     
     

Reference Services 

  • Provides general reference services to students, faculty and staff and handles face-to-face, telephone, email, and virtual reference requests in a timely manner.
  • Provides assistance in the use of online databases and resources.
  • Provides in-depth research assistance with projects from faculty and staff.
  • Engage students enrolled in the Research Assistance Program and evaluate best method of communication
  • Creates and maintains LibGuides.
     
     

Management Functions 

  • Shares responsibility of the supervision of library services during the day, evening and weekend hours.
  • Compiles accurate monthly statistical data.
     
     

Collection Development

  • Recommends materials for purchase.
  • Helps maintain reference collection which includes weeding, withdrawing, and discarding obsolete resources.

 

Miscellaneous

  • Participates in library displays and programs on a rotating basis.
  • Contributes to the Library’s newsletter “More Than Books” quarterly.
  • Stays current with developments in the library and information fields.

 

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Library Sciences (MLS) from an ALA accredited school or equivalent.  
  • Prior library reference work and/or teaching skills preferred.  
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Experience with personal computers and computerized searching expected.        
  • Familiarity with online databases essential.  
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations while maintaining a businesslike manner.  
  • Ability to supervise support staff 
  • Must be flexible to accommodate organizational needs.  
  • Ability to maintain a positive teamwork atmosphere by communicating in an effective and friendly manner with others.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a normal college library setting.
  • Some travel to off-site campus locations.
