PRIMARY PURPOSE: Primary function is the management of the activities and operations of the Library that bring the staff into regular direct contact with its users, including circulation, reference, online services, bibliographic instruction, course reserves, and interlibrary loan/document delivery. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervising all aspects of Public Services
  2. Establishing policies, standards and procedures for the department in all areas of public service
  3. Providing reference and research assistance to patrons
  4. Providing library instruction when called upon by academic faculty
  5. Serving as public services liaison with faculty, soliciting faculty input and coordinating academic initiatives between library and academics
  6. Establishing and maintain access to electronic resources
  7. Overseeing the physical layout of the public area of the library
  8. Running and analyzing library usage statistics
  9. Serving as Systems Librarian for the library’s Integrated Library System (WorldShare Management System)
  10. Maintaining the library’s website
  11. Taking the lead in hiring and training staff

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree from four-year college. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program or equivalent 

EXPERIENCE:  At least three years spent professionally in an academic environment, either in the Library or at an academic position. Supervisory experience strongly preferred.

CERTIFICATION: Master’s degree from an ALA-Accredited program or equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Strong liberal arts background. Reference experience in an academic library setting or equivalent academic teaching experience. Strong background in Catholic theology and culture. Commitment to the mission and values of Ave Maria University. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written.) Ability to deliver instruction in a classroom setting and on an individual basis. Good understanding of the academic environment and of the place of the Library in that environment.

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Position requires sitting for long periods of time and the visual and manual ability to use a computer keyboard. Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) weights of up to 40 lbs and the ability to push a fully loaded book cart. Packing and unpacking boxes of books may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to electronics work. Ability and willingness to work one night a week and two weekend days per month may be required.
