THIS POSITION IS A PART-TIME, NON-BUDGETED POSITION,
WORKING VARIOUS HOURS, DEPENDING ON OPERATIONAL NEEDS.
INCUMBENT WORKS APPROXIMATELY 10-19 HOURS PER WEEK.

Under general supervision, this position perform a variety of clerical library duties, within well-defined standards; to assist the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; and to perform other specifically related work as required.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: The incumbent performs a variety of routine library duties gained through on-the-job training and gradually receives responsibility for full range of duties, including assisting the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; performs some clerical duties; and performs other specifically related work as required.
 
EXAMINATION PROCESS:  Based upon screening of the City application and résumé, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process.  This process may include, but is not limited to: panel interview and/or written examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
 
SELECTION PROCESS:  As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process.  Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
 
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following duties are typical of this classification.  Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Performs routine reference work, including providing direct answers to patrons' questions, providing instruction in use of the library catalog, directing patrons to standard print reference sources, and assisting users in online research;
  • Performs safety check of bookmobile and makes sure it is clean and fueled prior to departure;
  • Maintains control and care of library bookmobile;
  • Drives and operates the library's bookmobile, maintaining a safe driving record;
  • Assists patrons in the use of library facilities, including computers, printers, fax, microfilm, reading devices and other equipment;
  • Assists patrons in locating materials in all formats;
  • Locates and recommends books, answers basic reference questions in absence of a professional librarian;
  • Assumes responsible charge of the main library during assigned hours when professional staff is not available, including overseeing security, proper use of the library by patrons, and opening and closing of the facility;
  • Prepares poster displays and other basic art work;
  • Schedules class visits and story times; assists with programming and outreach efforts;
  • Assists in preparing and conducting story times and other children's programming;
  • Positively represents the library in the community;
  • Completes and submits reports as required;
  • Assists library patrons at circulation desk, checking library materials in and out, maintain circulation records and answering routine locations questions;
  • Issues library cards to patrons;
  • Gives information at the counter and over the telephone regarding library hours, rules, fines, and related subjects and routes calls to appropriate personnel;
  • Collects fines for overdue or lost materials;
  • Searches shelves for books;
  • Types materials such as labels, notices, and library forms;
  • Processes new library materials; mends and repairs library materials;  
  • Receives, opens and routes mail;
  • Operates standard office equipment, including personal computers, typewriters and copiers;
  • Performs a variety of general clerical and library duties;
  • Drives the bookmobile; and performs related work as required.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Include any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position.  Typical qualifying entrance background is:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Experience working with an automated system for service delivery in a public library circulation area is highly desirable.  One (1) year full-time library experience, AND Associate's degree or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency in Library Technology from an accredited institution is desirable.
 
LICENSE REQUIRED:  Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License and clean driving record.
 
KNOWLEDGE OF:  Safe and defensive driving skills; modern office equipment and procedures; basic computer use and basic computer applications; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematical skills; excellent customer service principles and practices; principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
 
ABILITY TO:  Learn library services, functions and policies; learn and master the use of an Integrated Library System (ILS); operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; patiently assist patrons with use of a library; maintain discipline and order among patrons using a library; read and write at the level required for successful job performance; type at a rate required for successful job performance; operate modern office equipment; perform and maintain a wide variety of library-related records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL:  Strength: Medium - Exert force of 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Frequently stand or walk, bend, push/pull, twist at the waist, handle, grip, grasp, finger/type, extend neck upward, downward or side to side.  Occasionally sit, stoop, crouch, reach above, at or below shoulder level. Rarely crawl, kneel, climb stairs. Vision: visual acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication.
