Job Description
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Consistently provides excellent customer service through work on the Library Information Desk. Provides reference services and library instruction to students, faculty, staff and other users both digitally and in person. Circulates library materials and equipment for in-house and off-campus use. Assists in the hiring, training, and supervising of student workers as needed. Utilizes excellent communication skills working with faculty, students, colleagues, vendors, and members of the community. Demonstrates the ability to work independently and collaboratively, plan, direct, and organize. Opens or closes the library office and information desk as assigned. Assists in the collection management process including the evaluation and development of library collections by recommending materials for purchase and withdrawal. Assists in developing library policy by participating in staff meetings and other activities designed to evaluate and develop library services. Contributes to the professional dialogue to improve library services at SPC , including working on library policies, procedures, and services. Maintains awareness of emerging technologies, standards, trends, and technical issues relating to circulation services. Serves as an informal liaison to promote library services and resources to instructors unfamiliar with library services through their academic departments. Records statistics on public service transactions, reference sessions, and study room use. Opens and closes tutoring rooms/study spaces when needed. Reads professional literature and participates in professional development opportunities when appropriate. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES At times will be responsible for overseeing all student workers on a shift. Supports other library staff who have primary supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Master’s degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association required; familiarity with customer service in the library including the provision of reference services. Preferred experiences include: serving diverse populations; working with non-traditional, first-generation, dual credit, and distance students; delivering library instruction to groups and individuals; programming and outreach experience, and demonstrated ability and comfort with utilizing technology in the workplace. Early career librarians welcome to apply. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general reports, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
