Position Summary

The Librarian will work with the Director of Library Services and Library Specialists to manage library resources, assist students and faculty with research and information needs, and develop educational programs to enhance information literacy. Responsibilities include maintaining the library's collection, implementing digital and physical resource organization, and supporting a collaborative learning environment. This is a part-time position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of current program offerings and curriculum to assist faculty in identifying and accessing materials for content-area instruction.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to, and an understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the community college student.
  • Support cataloging, database maintenance, and related automation projects.
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of bibliographic and authority records in the online catalog.
  • Update holdings data to reflect material transfer, withdrawal, and additions.
  • Support and file accurate records of location and status of all library items.
  • Provide group and individual instruction on information skills, research strategies, and use of resources and equipment
  • Promote literacy, reading, and library use through such activities as book talks, displays, publications, and special events.
  • Develop and maintain information networks and services to support learner needs.
  • Provide training to students and faculty in effective use of information systems.
  • Ensure intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats for all learners
  • Serve as a resource for issues regarding ethical use of information including issues of copyright and intellectual freedom. 
  • Collaborate with library specialists to deliver orientation for new students and faculty.
  • Effective human relations skills, professionalism, integrity, enthusiasm and commitment to learning and career exploration.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in the use of current educational technologies and software used in the workplace for word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Canvas, Canva etc.)
  • Knowledge of Bishop State Community College and the Alabama Community College System policies and procedures. 
  • Proficient in digital and web-based research.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize issues.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a variety of people with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision/ work independently.
  • Have a focus on being friendly and patient in responding to customer needs.
  • Have a willingness to maintain flexibility in order to meet customer needs.
  • Have a willingness and desire to learn new things and apply that learning.
  • Assume other responsibilities as needed or directed by the Director of Library Services, Instructional Services Administration, and/or President.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS, MILS, or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Previous work experience, internship, or practicum in library or media service.
