Part-time and Substitute Senior Library Assistant, Youth Services and Multiple Service Points

Curtis Memorial Library is seeking a self-motivated individual with strong customer service skills who enjoys working with children and their families.
This position is customer-focused, working at the youth services desk as well as multiple service points in the library.
 



Nature of Work 

Welcomes patrons and sets the tone for a great library experienceProvides basic readers’ advisory and reference services to patrons in the children’s and teens’ areas.  Proactively assists patrons in finding and using library resources and maintains collections and displays.
Will
work at additional service points, including Adult Services and Lending. Work is performed with some independent judgment and initiative.
 


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Provides exemplary customer service at multiple service points 
  • Engages patrons in conversations about the programs and services available at the library 
  • Assists patrons in finding and selecting books and other resources 
  • Offers meaningful recommendations of books and movies 
  • Creates and refreshes displays and keeps them looking neat and appealing 
  • Places holds and interlibrary loans; provides instruction in using the library catalog 
  • Assists patrons with basic computer needs, including printing, computer passes, email, and online resources 
  • Assists patrons with downloading e-books and audiobooks and with copy machines 
  • Provides basic reference assistance and instruction 
  • Performs circulation activities including registering new borrowers, checking items in/out, and holds management 
  • May provide Meeting Room orientation and AV assistance 
  • Opens and closes designated areasEnsures a safe and positive environment for patrons 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications 

  • Customer-focused and friendly 
  • Familiarity with a variety of children’s and young adult authors and literature 
  • Knowledge of child development and experience working with youth of varied ages 
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing 
  • Ability to use resources and current library and office technologies relevant to the job duties, including Microsoft Office applications 
  • Knowledge and skill in digital literacy, including basic online search tools and strategies and downloading eBooks and audiobooks 
  • Ability to use diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain relationships with library patrons and employees 
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring some bending, lifting, pushing, and walking; sufficient manual dexterity, ability to speak, and vision to perform job-specific tasks 
  • Education and/or experience relevant to the job responsibilities. 
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including some weekends and evenings. Substitute
    library assistants may be called to fill in long- or short-term during regular staff absences.
     

 

This is a part-time position (8-10 hrs/wk) with the potential to work as a substitute for additional hours.
