    Reports to:   Building Principal
    Assignment:   2026-2027 School Year - Ongoing
    Hours:   Part-Time  (3-15 hours per week depending on season)
    Salary Range:  $16.00 per hour
    Union:  Unrepresented
    FLSA:  Non-Exempt

    This position is strictly outside of school hours and is not part of the school secretary bargaining unit or any school-day clerical role. The Library Assistant operates independently from the school office and supports library services only during designated community hours.

    The Nisswa Community Children's Library Assistant is a vital part of one of the most unique and special spaces in our school community. This role supports the Nisswa Community Children's Library during community access hours outside of the school day, helping create a welcoming, organized, and engaging environment for students, families, and community members.

    This position is strictly outside of school hours and is not part of the school secretary bargaining unit or any school-day clerical role. The Library Assistant operates independently from the school office and supports library services only during designated community hours.

    This is a relationship-driven role for someone who genuinely enjoys working with people, values community connection, and takes pride in creating a space where curiosity, literacy, and belonging thrive.

    What You'll Do

    Create an Exceptional Patron Experience 

    Serve as a welcoming and helpful presence for all visitors
    Assist patrons in locating materials and navigating library resources
    Answer questions and support basic research needs, including digital tools
    Manage library cards including issuing new cards and maintaining accounts
    Check materials in and out using the library circulation system

    Maintain a Beautiful, Organized Library Space 

    Open, secure, and close the library during assigned shifts
    Accurately sort, shelve, and organize materials
    Assist with processing and cataloging new items
    Communicate and collaborate with library staff and building leadership to ensure smooth coverage

    Support Programs and Community Engagement 

    Assist in preparing for and supporting library programs and events
    Help create inviting, ready-to-use spaces for activities
    Participate in outreach efforts that promote library services within the Nisswa community

    Provide Operational and Administrative Support 

    Complete clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, and answering phones
    Assist with basic reporting and data collection
    Monitor inventory and help maintain supplies and materials

    Qualifications

    Must be at least 14 years of age
    A genuine interest in reading, learning, and helping others

    Preferred: Experience in customer service, education, or library settings

    Skills and Strengths

    Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    High attention to detail and organization
    Comfort with basic technology and digital systems
    Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods

    Schedule & Work Environment

    Schedule
    June through August: 2 to 3 days per week from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
    September and May: 2 evenings per week from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (optional)
    Additional hours may include evenings or weekends based on programming needs. Hours and days may vary.

    Important Distinction
    All hours for this role occur outside of the regular school day and are aligned exclusively to community library hours. This position does not perform school-day duties and is not affiliated with the school office or secretary unit.

    Environment
    Work is performed in a library setting with frequent interaction with students, families, and community members
