Job duties include but are not limited to: staffing the youth services desk and providing reader’s advisory and reference for patrons of all ages, summer reading program support, craft preparation, passive program support and collection maintenance support.

Approximate start date: May 18
Approximate end date: August 8
Approximately 15–20 hours per week for about 12 weeks.

Applicants must have flexible schedules (including some evenings and weekends) and experience working with children. Preference will be given to applicants with coursework or experience in library studies, education, and/or child development.

Starting Rate: $20.2692/hour, no benefits.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists patrons at the Children's Desk with a variety of informational and technical needs, including copying/scanning/faxing, using computers, and operating e-readers.
  • Develops and maintains library collections by selecting and removing materials as assigned.
  • Performs reader's advisory and ready reference.
  • Assists with library programs and registering patrons.
  • Assists with projects relating to collection development.
  • Maintains displays, particularly Picture Books and Reader collections and on the display table.
  • Assists patrons with the operation of self-check, game and Internet stations.
  • Provides direction and guidance to library volunteers.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of library records.

Requirements of Work

High school diploma or GED plus one additional year of relevant education or training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills.

Knowledge of
  • Requires knowledge and ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order.
  • Requires working knowledge of English grammar and spelling.
Ability to
  • Ability to understand and perform routine library procedures. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public in person and on the telephone and maintain effective public relations. 
  • Ability to operate library equipment properly, including LinkCat. 
Skill in
  • Requires keyboarding, filing, and office programming ability, including word processing and spreadsheets.

Other Job Functions

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

This work is performed in an office environment but does involve lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects on wheels weighing 60-80 pounds. Flexible work hours with frequent evening and weekend hours.
