Job Description Summary:
The Library Technician provides staff coverage of the library’s circulation and service desk in the evenings and on weekends. This position involves performing a full range of circulation and interlibrary loan/document delivery functions. These activities include using automated systems for the lending and borrowing of library materials for library patrons and for interlibrary loan partners. The incumbent will work as a team member to provide excellent, proactive customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities
Patron Services (allocated time 50%)
- *Use the library automated systems to charge out library materials, process patron records, determine materials status, locate resources within the system, arrange for transfers of library materials, place holds, register new patrons, and perform additional procedures as needed
- *Provide routine reference and referral services in the absence of a reference librarian
- *Assist patrons in using the library catalog, electronic journals and databases, and equipment
- *Maintain photocopy machines with supplies of paper and toner, and assist patrons with equipment malfunctions
Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery (allocated time 30%)
- *Manages all functions related to the processing of interlibrary loan (ILL) and document delivery requests
- Verifies bibliographic and holdings information by searching the OCLC WorldCat database as well as other catalogs
- *Investigates and recommends new technologies and consortial arrangements in support of improved ILL/document delivery services
- *Maintains relationships with external libraries and uses knowledge of the larger information community to configure the National Library of Medicine’s DOCLINE routing tables so as to minimize cost and delivery time
- Explain ILL policies to University members and to other libraries that contact the Library for information
Other Duties (allocated time 20%)
- Maintain a neat, functional and safe library environment
- Survey the library public areas at the end of each work shift and report any anomalies or unusual occurrences to the full-time library staff
- Update and maintain the Faculty/Student published works display
- May assist in other areas of library operations as required
Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with standard library policies and procedures
- Previous experience with an integrated library system
- Must have excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people; faculty, staff, students and members of the public
- Effective problem solving skills
- Effective troubleshooting with computers, copiers and printers
- Excellent literacy skills
- Work independently and as part of a team
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or general education (GED)
- Library experience, preferably academic or health science
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to communicate using the written and spoken word
- Physical ability lift 25 pounds, carry, push, pull, climb, bend, kneel and stoop
