Position Summary

The Library Technician position is a public-facing position primarily stationed at the library’s circulation desk, serving as a first point of contact for patrons and providing front-line support for library services. The position supports the daily functions of the library by providing excellent customer service assistance to students, faculty, staff, and the Santa Fe community. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with the use of library resources and electronic resources they need to be successful in their courses. The role requires strong decision-making, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a highly functioning staff and to work independently as needed. The person in this position must be able to enforce library policies with professionalism and clarity. The person in this role must be committed to serving a diverse college community and actively participate in and contribute to continuous quality improvement.

This role will be required to work on-site at Santa Fe Community College.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses computers and library specific software to perform daily operations at the library’s circulation desk and assisting patrons on desktop and laptop computers. 

  • Provides responsive customer service to a diverse patron population (students, faculty, staff, and community members). 

  • Assists patrons with the use of specialized library equipment including printers, copier, and scanner. 

  • Assists patrons locate material they request. 

  • Supports students in accessing and using electronic tools including learning platforms (Canvas), and online tools such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office. 

  • Communicates clearly and professionally with library staff, faculty, students, and the community. 

  • Shelves books and other library materials accurately according to the Library of Congress Classification system. 

  • Prepares new library materials for circulation. 

  • Demonstrates initiative by taking responsibility for tasks as they arise. 

  • Assists librarians with special projects, events, and library initiatives as needed. 

  • Responds calmly and professionally to occasional disruptions or challenging interactions. 

  • Enforces library policies and procedures with consistency and professionalism. 

  • Performs responsibilities independently with minimal supervision. 

  • Follows written and verbal instructions accurately with strong attention to detail. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to use computers including library programs, Microsoft tools, and Google Workspace and learn new technology skills as needed. 

  • Ability to accurately shelve and organize library materials using the Library of Congress Classification system. 

  • Able to provide excellent customer service. 

  • Skilled in decision-making and problem solving. 

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in both oral and written forms with library staff and patrons. 

  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and with an attention to detail. 

  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, and best practices. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree  

  • 1 year of experience working in libraries, customer service, or in higher education. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

Physical Demands and Working Conditions 

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking within the library.

  • The employee frequently lifts both light and moderately heavy objects, operates tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

  • Work is primarily conducted at a public service desk or within the library stacks. 

  • This position requires frequent interaction with a diverse patron population and may involve managing stressful situations, including addressing concerns or complaints from frustrated or occasionally confrontational individuals.

  • The employee must remain calm, professional, and solution-oriented while upholding library policies and maintaining a positive, inclusive environment for all users. 

Work Hours

  • Typically, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Fridays. May be required to work after-hours and/or weekends.  The schedule may change during interim weeks and summers.
