Position Overview

*This position only works 19 hours per week*    

Join our Library team and play a vital role in maintaining and organizing the library collection, ensuring materials are easily accessible for our patrons. You'll assist the circulation staff by checking in materials, pulling items for customer requests, and performing proactive customer service duties. You’ll also help customers with self-checkout, online account access, room reservations, navigating the public catalog, and directing them to the appropriate staff for further assistance when needed.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintain and organize the library collection, alphabetize and numerically arrange materials on library carts, and ensure materials are readily available and accessible
  • Conduct shelf-reading of the library collection and fill displays as needed
  • Assist circulation staff by checking in library materials, pulling items for customer requests, and clearing item records
  • Answer phones, transfer calls, cut paper for hold wrappers, and prepare library cards for distribution
  • Perform shelf checks for missing materials, collect book drops, process weeded materials, and move courier boxes
  • Provide proactive customer service, including assistance with self-checkout, online account access, self-registration, and navigating the online catalog
  • Direct customers to the appropriate staff for troubleshooting, walk them to requested titles or areas of interest, and assist with photocopies, fax, and vending machines
  • Help customers sign up for the public computer lab and direct them to the appropriate staff for further assistance if needed

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of 8th grade supplemented by sufficient education to provide some familiarity with a variety of library materials.

Management Preferences: Customer service experience is desired. Basic knowledge of computers and office software is desired

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of purposes and use of libraries; including Dewey Decimal System
  • Knowledge of current resources and content available on library website
  • Knowledge of the use of photocopiers, fax and change machines, add value and Vendacard machines, computers, and software programs.
  • Ability to work without constant supervision
  • Ability to know when and how to refer customers to proper staff member for assistance 
  • Ability to deal tactfully with co-workers and the general public 
  • Ability to orally communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees
  • Ability to operate library automation system
  • Ability to perform numerical and alphabetical arrangements
  • Ability to complete timesheet using Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to check email
  • Ability to follow instructions
Conditions of Employment:
Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
