Description


The City of Richmond seeks dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking people to join its team as a Part-time Library Associate/Youth Services for the Richmond Public Library - Main Branch. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is an excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes good customer service. Selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower

This class coordinates programs and services for users and staff of the City Library. Work may include planning, developing, and implementing special library activities and programs; executing the City Library's strategic plan including providing programs for children, young adults, and special needs groups; facilitating, marketing, and promoting special programs; and preparing and updating library web content.  This position also may prepare reports, assist patrons with locating materials in the computer or catalog and with physically locating materials or equipment.   This position may support circulation functions and assist with special projects or other library programs. 

The incumbent is responsible for working with diverse groups within the community and providing exceptional customer service by assisting patrons with the use of emerging technologies and access to library resources. This position will require some evening and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) scheduling on a rotating basis on site.

Duties include but are not limited to


  • Plans and implements weekly Early literacy storytimes (babies, toddlers, and preschoolers) at local daycares and preschools
  • Promotes and markets programs and activities.
  • Develops brochures and fliers for programs.
  • Conducts outreach, represents the library at various community events, and promotes library services in the community.
  • Assists patrons and answers their question.
  • Assists library users with technology, reference, and readers advisory questions.
  • Performs circulation duties.
  • Attends various meetings including staff meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary; not an inclusive list. 

  • The incumbent has considerable knowledge of Early literacy skills, children’s developmental stages, STEAM activities, computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Integrate Library Systems, electronic databases, and related software applications.

  • Must have strong mastery of English composition, spelling and grammar, general knowledge of children’s literature, and overall subjects held by the library.

  • The individual can demonstrate skills of excellent customer service.  

  • Assisting patrons, communicating with various internal and external departments.

  • Working with youth pre-school to middle school, performance and keeping children’s attention, marketing and promoting special programs. 

  • Must be able to plan, coordinate, develop, implement, and facilitate special events, activities, and programs.  

  • Proficient oral and written communication is required.

  • Researching and keeping current on early literature best practices.

  • Using library programs as tools for reference or information questions.

  • Using various office equipment such as computers, printers, public address systems, electronic displays, etc.

  • This individual can demonstrate the ability to have an interest in library culture as learning environments for all ages and levels, work with children and adults with a wide range of abilities, serve the public and speak publicly.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in library science, literature, education, information systems, or related field. 
  • Six months of public library experience. 
  • One year of experience working with youth up to 6 years of age.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • None Required

PREFFERED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly walk, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach; and occasionally climb, balance, crawl, stand, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
