Description

The City of Richmond seeks dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking people to join its team as a Temporary Part-time Library Associate/Memory Lab for the Richmond Public Library - Main Branch. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is an excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes good customer service. Selected candidate(s) will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower

This position coordinates programs and services for users and staff of the City Library. Work includes providing front-line support for members of the public using the Memory Lab; assisting with research, supporting collections work and public programming.

The incumbent is responsible for working with diverse groups within the community and providing exceptional customer service by assisting patrons with the use of emerging technologies and access to library resources. This position will require working days, evenings, and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) scheduling on a rotating basis.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Utilizes new and existing technologies, hardware and software used in the Memory Lab.
  • Conducts orientations for new Memory Lab users and troubleshooting when people are using the Memory Lab. 
  • Exhibit strong people skills and a welcoming, approachable demeanor. 
  • Learns and shares knowledge of Richmond Room’s collections, ongoing local history projects, and the work being done by the Community Memory Fellow, other librarians, and other users of the Memory Lab. 
  • Communicates effectively with a wide range of people and represent the Uniquely Richmond aspects of the library’s mission. 
  • Staffs the Memory Lab and assists the public with use of the Memory Lab, including providing orientations and in-person assistance. 
  • Maintains reservation schedule and conducts intake interviews with patrons booking the Memory Lab. 
  • Assists with digitization and other collections work at the direction of Special Collections Librarian. 
  • Assists with outreach and public programs at the library and other locations in the city; represents library at various community events. 
  • Helps grow library collections through identifying historically or locally significant materials. 

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary; not an inclusive list.

  • The incumbent has considerable knowledge (or some combination) of archival and library standards, other digital collections around the world, and interesting or relevant local history projects. 

  • The incumbent will advise colleagues on proper protocols and stay abreast of and incorporate new technology and trends. 

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, electronic databases, and related software applications such as SIRSI Workflows. 

  • Incumbent must understand the community as it relates to promoting library services.

  • The incumbent demonstrates excellent customer service assisting patrons, communicating with various internal and external departments.   

  • Working with the community to promote special programs.  

  • Must be able to plan, coordinate, develop, implement, and facilitate special events, activities, and programs.  

  • Strong oral and written communication, customer service skills in assisting patrons, including routine spot-checks on equipment to confirm proper functioning, able to handle challenges accordingly. 

  • Using library programs as tools for reference or information questions. Using various office equipment such as computers, printers, public address systems, electronic displays, etc.

  • This individual demonstrates the ability to have an interest in library culture as learning environments for all ages and levels. 

  • Ability to work with various audiences including children and adults with a wide range of abilities, serve the public, and speak publicly.

  • Provides excellent, patient user service, with a special attention to helping people build digital literacy skills whenever possible.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in library science, history, computer science, audio/video engineering, education, information systems, or related field.
  • Two years of public library experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in library science.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly walk, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach; and occasionally climb, balance, crawl, stand, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
