Description

The City of Norfolk's Downtown Branch at Slover is seeking an experienced full-time Library Associate I to join the youth programming area. The Library Associate I assists with the library's daily operations and may act as an assistant to the supervisor. Library Associate I’s provide customer service to patrons by developing and delivering age-appropriate programs and readers' advisories. The Library Associate I also promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in using the collection and equipment. This position primarily works in the children’s/Teen area but may be required to assist in other areas as needed.

The Slover is a premier destination located in downtown Norfolk that contains a branch of the Norfolk Public Library system, the Sargeant Memorial Collection Archives, the Roy E. Hendrix Business center, Creative Studios, Venue Rentals, and a Café. 
The Slover supports a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the Downtown Branch at Slover library component. 


Departmental Hiring Salary Range:  $41,503-$47,728.45


Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts Early Literacy programs such as Babygarten, KinderSTEM, Storytime, and 1-2-3 Play with Me.
  • Plans and promotes teen programming and monitors teen space. 
  • Plans and promotes programs for youth and families such as art activities, crafting, cultural programs, etc.
  • Plans and promotes the Summer Reading Program.
  • Outreaches to schools, daycares, and other organizations promoting and representing NPL.
  • Maintains and monitors Kidzone and the program room.
  • Provides excellent customer service; assist patrons with library materials and book selections.
  • Assists in building and maintaining the library’s juvenile and YA collections.
  • Conducts tours of the library, including school tours and field trips.
  • Orders materials for the Children’s collection.
  • Inventories Storytime kits, Summer Reading Program materials, and other materials as assigned.
  • Leads, plans, and executes book displays or displays showcasing themes, seasons, etc.
  • Provides regular coverage of Public Service desks.
  • Answers reference questions involving resources in print and electronic formats.
  • Assists in the use of computers, copiers, and scanners.
  • Provides Reader’s Advisory.
  • Prepares bibliographies and suggested reading lists; sets up book displays.
  • Creates and provides monthly office supply lists.
  • Participates in committees and attends training related to the job.
  • Promotes the concept of the Family Place Library in Norfolk.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.
  • Performs administrative duties in collecting data and preparing Excel and written reports.
  • Completes opening and closing procedures. Assists with cleanliness of the library.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

One year of experience in library or related services.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver's license 
Work Hours: This full-time position is 40 hours per week and will include rotating nights and weekends to support operations of the library.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.
