Job Summary:

Library Associates serve as paraprofessionals in a busy library environment. Work involves constant interaction with the public, problem solving for patrons and staff, reader’s advisory and other related library tasks.  Position also performs a variety of library clerical tasks designed to implement, maintain and execute Clay County Library practices and procedures. As part of their contact with library patrons, Associates demonstrate knowledge of library services as well as interest in fulfilling user requests.  

Position requires a flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as initial patron point-of-contact and provides informational assistance

  • Provides standard reader and reference assistance services to the public in person, over phone and via email

  • Circulates library materials using an automated Integrated Library System (ILS); checks out/in and renews materials; places items on hold and searches for materials in the ILS catalog and in the physical collection

  • Retrieves, shelves and shifts books and other library materials

  • Collects and processes patron payments for fines and fees related to overdue materials and lost/damaged items and processes credit card payments for the same

  • Assists patrons using the public computers and with printing from public computers and photocopying

  • Assists in the processing of library books and materials

  • Creates thematic displays highlighting areas of the collection

  • Performs reader’s advisory, offering personalized recommendations to patrons based on the collection and online resources

  • Assists in the initial processing of inter-library loan requests.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • At least one year of customer service related experience (Preferred)

  • A valid State of Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record

  • Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

The person in this position needs to be able to frequently move about inside the area of responsibility to assist the public and manage library resources

Positions self to assist patrons with technology and materials and to pull and re-shelve materials, including at precarious heights

Frequently operates a computer and other productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

This position constantly communicates with the public, assessing needs and providing guidance. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
