POSITION SUMMARY
The Adult Services Library Associate performs customer service, reference, and technology assistance to library patrons. This position communicates with patrons, resolves concerns, and helps connect patrons to appropriate resources, programs, and services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides reference and readers advisory services at the reference services desk.
- Using automated library system and online resources, connects patrons to print, non-print, and digital resources.
- Provides general assistance in the use of computer equipment and software application use.
- Interacts extensively in person, over the phone, and by email with patrons, staff, partner agencies, and other community groups.
- Completes reservations for computer use in the Technology Lab.
- Completes opening and closing procedures.
- May assist in the planning and implementation of services, programs, and special events for adults.
- May assist in the creation and distribution of library marketing materials and social media.
- May participate in conducting outreach to the community.
- Provides technology instruction both formally and informally.
- Provides information about library programs, services, and facilities.
- Completes reservations for study room and meeting room use.
- Accepts payments for reserved meeting rooms, copy/printing, and miscellaneous supplies.
- Utilizes computers, automated library systems, the Internet, and online tools and resources.
- Maintains knowledge of reference and circulating collection materials, both print and electronic.
- Sorts and organizes materials for shelving, shelves materials, tidies shelves, and shelf reads to ensure materials are in their proper order.
- Performs basic maintenance or repair on library equipment.
- Maintains compliance with library and city policies and procedures and explains policies and procedures and to patrons.
- Maintains safe environment for both staff and patrons.
- Responds to and resolves complex/sensitive patron inquiries, concerns, and complaints, referring those that cannot be resolved to a supervisor.
- Works cooperatively with the public, volunteers, and other Library employees.
- Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- May work with volunteers.
- Assist in circulation or children’s services as needed.
- May represent the Library at City, community, or professional events and meetings.
- May serve as a point of contact for community partners.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PREPARATION AND TRAINING
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in any field required.
Work Experience: 2 years of customer service experience required; 1 year library and/or bookstore experience preferred.
Certifications and/or Licensures: None
Required Driver’s License: Yes
An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Public library reference methods and procedures.
- Reference interview techniques.
- Reader’s advisory techniques.
- Current literature
- Dewey Decimal System of classification.
- The use of automated library systems such as Sierra, Prospector, and online public access catalog.
- Customer Service standards
- Common and emerging personal technology applications.
- Social media and marketing strategies.
Skills in the use of:
- Personal computers and associated software such as Microsoft Office and online content management programs.
- Automated library systems such as Sierra, Prospector, OCLC.
- Library and general office equipment.
Ability to:
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Effectively manage time and priorities.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in the collection of payments and other money handling tasks.
- Excellent attention to detail to ensure accurate data entry and records management.
- Provide instruction on the use of online library catalog, general computer use, and various online resources and/or applications.
- Proactively promote the Library’s collection, services, and programs.
- Serve all patrons with patience, tact, and courtesy.
- Exercise good judgment and make sound decisions.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in a standard library environment, requiring standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time. Must be able to push and pull a full book cart and perform occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs/force).
HOURLY RATE
$22.31 - $33.47/Hourly Rate
This is a part-time position.
