The Braille & Talking Book Library Reader's Advisor position is responsible for reviewing and adding new patron applications, assisting patrons with book selection, circulation, and providing excellence in servicing their needs. This position will also be responsible for a variety of programming, assisting with our quarterly Prairie Trails Newsletter, cataloguing materials, editing on the computer and assisting in other areas within the Braille & Talking Book Library.

This is a Full-Time 40 Hour Weekly position with the Department of Education. For more information on the Department of Education, please visit https://doe.sd.gov/ .

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Experience in customer service, an understanding of serving patrons with visual and physical impairments as well as knowledge of different reading genres.

High school diploma is required. Bachelor's degree and/or library coursework/experience is preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • principles, practices, techniques, and services of a library;
  • customer service excellence;
  • a variety of book genres;
  • various Microsoft Office products;
  • monthly status reports.

Skill to:
  • effectively communicate both written and verbally;
  • prepare detailed statistical reports;
  • provide exceptional customer service;
  • work as part of a team.

Ability to:
  • make professional connections with patrons of the Braille & Talking Book Library;
  • promote programming and new materials to patrons;
  • stay current with changes from the National Library Service;
  • maintain up-to-date records for patrons in our database;
  • continuously seek out training and educational opportunities;
  • communicate information in person, in writing, or over the telephone;
  • use a computer to load, edit, and store documents;
  • proofread with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • organize work and set priorities with minimal direction;
  • lift and carry boxes of library materials;
  • work independently;
  • ability to lift 50 lbs.;
  • other duties as assigned.
