Distinguishing Features of Work

Wichita Public Library has an immediate opening for a Library Assistant position at the Evergreen Branch.  
 
General responsibilities of this position include customer assistance in all aspects of library service in person and by telephone (circulation, reader’s advisory, public computing, and basic reference). Additional tasks include branch operations such as cash handling, shelving and shelf-reading, collection maintenance, public computer assistance, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.  
 
The employee selected for this position must be bilingual (fluent in English and Spanish) and able to demonstrate a strong customer service orientation, possess excellent searching skills, demonstrate computer competency that includes the ability to assist others with basic public computing needs, and be able to learn and implement City and Library policies and procedures.  
 
This position is assigned to the Evergreen Branch, however coverage at other locations may be scheduled as needed.  

THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION: The day and hours for this position: 

September - May
  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday:  1:00pm-5:00pm.
  • Every other Friday: 1:00pm-5:00pm.
  • Every other weekend Saturday: 9:45am-6:15pm and Sunday: 12:45pm-5:15pm. 

June-August
  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 1:00pm-5:00pm.
  • Every other Tuesday: 1:00pm-5:30pm.
  • Every other Saturday 9:45am-6:15pm.
 
Bargaining Unit: No Union Representation

Examples of Work Performed

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required. Provide translation services routinely for the library and as needed for other City departments.
  • Performs reference and/or circulation work.
  • Plans, prepares and presents programs.
  • Assists with maintenance of collection (e.g. pulling holds, shelving, sorting, shelf reading, checking items in and out, etc.).
  • Prepares displays.
  • Provides basic reader's advisory services.
  • In charge of a section or branch library as assigned.
  • Mends and processes materials.
  • Performs clerical work.
  • Assists customers with basic technology needs (e.g. computer, e-reader and tablet needs).
  • Assists customers with the use of library services.
  • Serves on system-wide committees as assigned.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing of a section or branch as assigned.
  • Oversees work of volunteers.
  • Dependent upon assignment, position may be required to travel to different work sites throughout the workday. Those positions will require reliable personal transportation.

Requirements of Work

  • Knowledge of standard library principles, practices, and methods
  • Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations, office software and windows environments
  • Knowledge of entering monetary transactions in a software program
  • Knowledge of basic reader interest and of book titles and authors
  • Ability to sort and file items in accordance with established procedures based on alphabetical and/or numeric coding
  • Knowledge of general reference practices
  • Ability to manually count back change
  • Ability to follow simple instructions
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to: push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manual office tools and supplies
  • Ability to develop effective relationships with associates, outside agencies and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers

Experience and Training


Required Experience and Training
 
  • A Highschool diploma.
  • Fluency in both written and oral English and Spanish.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
 
Preferred Experience and Training
 
  • One (1) year experience working in a library or bookstore.
  • Familiarity with Polaris library software system.
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System or library cataloging methods.
