Job Summary:

Are you passionate about creating exceptional customer experiences? Do you thrive in a dynamic, service-focused environment? The Largo Public Library is seeking a Library Assistant II to join our innovative and community-driven team!
In this role, you'll provide hands-on support for our Outreach Services, which includes driving our Bookmobile and home delivery vehicle!

You’ll be instrumental in ensuring every library visitor receives outstanding service while helping support and implement the Library’s Strategic Plan and annual Playbook objectives.

What We’re Looking For:

Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
Valid driver’s license and ability to drive the Bookmobile or home delivery vehicle.
Hours for this position are primarily 8:30 – 5:00, Monday through Friday.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains service and manages staff in the absence of a supervisor
  • Receives and resolves public complaints and issues or escalates to the manager when appropriate
  • Assists in
    • scheduling, supervising, assignments, training, and evaluation of staff
    • planning, determining budget and supply needs, and policy and procedure revisions
  • Oversees other assigned projects and manages staff to accomplish project goals

Technical

  • Assesses patron inquiries and matches library services and sources to library services, programs, and products
  • Maintains the library's collections and public areas to appeal aesthetically to patrons
  • Ensures a high level of satisfaction for patrons throughout their experience at the library
  • Creates a positive and welcoming environment within the library
  • Provides information to patrons and readers' advisory service
  • Acts as a leader among library support staff who remains positive in all encounters with the public and fellow staff; serves as a floor supervisor – directing the library assistants in their daily duties and ensuring the workflow is continuous, courteous, and effective
  • Amends the desk schedule as needed to ensure staff coverage of public areas
  • Collaborates with the Library Security Guard to ensure a safe environment for customers and staff
  • Instructs patrons in the use of the computer catalog
  • Facilitates computer literacy instruction, including catalog and database instruction
  • Provides computer assistance and troubleshooting by assisting patrons with the internet, e-mail accounts, downloading, saving, and printing documents and files, using office productivity software, and helping with wireless access and Smart Access Manager troubleshooting
  • Proficiency in using the Integrated Library System public and support services functions
  • Articulates and demonstrates technical concepts and procedures to all levels of staff
  • Basic proficiency and ability to help patrons with
    • presentation, word processing, and spreadsheet software programs
    • audio-visual and presentation equipment
  • Inputs, updates, accesses, and retrieves data from a computer
  • Plans programs to enhance interest in the library's collection and improve literacy
  • Promotes and develops community partnerships and working relationships
  • Speaks to local organizations to promote library services
  • Assists with programming by planning and presenting special programs in assigned departmental areas
  • Assists with public relations and publicity

SERVICE AREA SUPPORT FUNCTIONS

OUTREACH SERVICES

  • Drives and parks the bookmobile and home delivery vehicle, daily vehicle inspections, and takes the vehicles for service
  • Bookmobile/Outreach customer service and main library duties as assigned
  • Assists Library Outreach Liaison with Bookmobile collection maintenance
  • Creates and implements programs for children, teens, and adults for Outreach Services
  • Facilitates working relationships with non-profits, businesses, and other organizations to broaden the customer base
  • Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly reports

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS: As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or closely related program and one (1) year of current experience in library operations and library science coursework, or equivalency of education and experience
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred
  • Valid Driver's License

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 95% inside a climate-controlled building and 5% outside, which may include driving. Bookmobile/Outreach Position: 80-90% driving or working in the bookmobile or outreach vehicle; 10-20% in the library or other indoor environment.

Physical Requirements: The job’s essential functions require standing and walking up to approximately eight (8) hours per day. The work requires frequent bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to listen to patron questions and answer telephones; enough to listen to the directions of supervisors. Speaking: Ability to talk to patrons on the phone and in person. Seeing: Ability to see and read computer monitor screens, identify book titles, and read fine print.

Driving Requirements: The work requires some driving; the Bookmobile/Outreach position requires driving and possessing a valid Florida Driver's License. 

Technology: The work requires the ability to operate telephones, smartphones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and laptop computers, calculators, and all associated software. It also requires proficiency with computer hardware and software programs, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications, internet applications, database management, patron print release stations, scanner self-checkout terminals, audiovisual equipment, and cash registers.

Languages: Besides English, Spanish fluency is preferred for the Bookmobile/Outreach position.
