The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a part-time Library Assistant II for its Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch.  This position performs customer service roles at the public service desks by answering and attending to customers’ questions in person and over the phone. Assists with programming and outreach activities.

The Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch at Broad Creek is a cornerstone of Norfolk's library system, serving as a vibrant hub for education, culture, and community gathering. Jordan-Newby offers diverse resources to the public.

Department Hiring Salary Range:  19.69 per hr.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:
 

  • Front line customer service at the public desk; assisting patrons with library inquiries concerning library and community services.
  • Provides customer service in building as it relates to all customer needs and inquiries, directing patrons to a supervisor when needed.
  • Understands verbal and written instructions and can communicate information and directions to patrons effectively via phone or in person.
  • Assists patrons with computers, NPL’s catalog, NPL webpage resources, copy machines, fax and scanning devices.
  • Provides resource retrieval and assistance for patrons as well as recommending materials based on patron needs.
  • Assists with programs and events in the library and may be called upon for outreach efforts. 
  • Performs circulation duties of checking materials in and out, reserving materials requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans, collecting fines or fees, responding to correspondence.
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing statistical reports, ordering supplies, opening mail, distributing library materials.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Assists with events by setting up displays and researching and preparing information about authors.
  • Performs other assigned duties as required and requested by supervisors.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

One year of experience in library or related customer service work..
