JOB SUMMARY

This is a Part-Time, Extra Help Position.
Under general supervision, a Library Assistant performs a wide variety of technical library tasks related to circulation, shelving, technical processing and patron assistance.

Candidates bilingual in Spanish, Farsi, or Punjabi are preferred, but all other candidates are also encouraged to apply.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Assist library patrons at circulation desk by registering borrowers, checking library materials in/out, collecting fines and fees, locating library materials, and resolving problems.
  2. Assist the public in use of the library by giving standard information in person or on the telephone, and by explaining the use of library facilities to new patrons.
  3. Use computer to track and locate library material and to perform some word processing.
  4. Shelve materials; read shelves; shift collections.
  5. Search and maintain online databases; download records for cataloging, interlibrary loan and literacy record-keeping.
  6. Learn daily circulation assignments, process library materials; mend materials; provide clerical support. 
  7. Perform routine troubleshooting procedures for all office equipment.
  8. Participate in staff meetings; attend workshops and training as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Familiarity with the fundamental purposes, typical collections and routine procedures of modern public libraries.

Ability to:
Learn standard library principles, policies and procedures, techniques and services; learn classification systems; learn to perform technical library tasks within area of assignment; interact effectively with library patrons, employees and the general public; learn to use a variety of computer hardware and software to perform essential library duties; utilize correct verbal and written English skills; make minor decisions in accordance with established policies; work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; the ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving standing and moving from one area of the office to another; the ability to see; ability to hear and communicate orally; sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements such as shelving, typing, filing, data entry, and/or use of calculators, ten-key adding machine, or other office equipment or supplies; may involve extensive VDT exposure. Requires the ability to climb ladders or step stools, push or pull book carts, move boxes of materials of considerable weight from one location to another.

Disaster Service Workers: 
All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.

License or Certificate:
This classification may require a valid California driver’s license.
