JOB SUMMARY

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to provide support and work with the patrons of the City of Victoria Public Library. The Library Assistant I is responsible for the daily operations of a library department while implementing procedures and policies to ensure that the public is served with excellence. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists patrons with signing up for library cards, locating and checking out materials, and using library systems and equipment; works with patrons to resolve overdue, damaged, and lost materials; collects fees as appropriate.
  • May process newspapers, magazines and microforms and assist with periodical renewals. 
  • May receive and sort incoming mail and deliveries; may assist with unboxing and processing new materials. 
  • May plan, organize and implement experiences, services and/or programs for patrons.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a library environment. May be required to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to 45 pounds.     
               

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines 
High school diploma or GED equivalent AND some previous customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.  
  • General office policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Customer service principles, practices, and etiquette.
  • General library operations and services.
  • Proficiency in use of computers and basics office equipment. 
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines. 
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public. Completing basic mathematic calculations. 
  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Maintaining accurate records and filing systems. 
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.  
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • A valid State driver’s license is required.
