Description

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Library Assistant assists with the day-to-day operation of the Library. This includes providing customer service to patrons, circulation, reference, programming, Bookmobile operations, and public computer assistance. This position is scheduled Monday–Friday 9:45 AM - 6:15 PM, with regularly rotating Wednesday evenings and Saturdays.  Occasional additional Saturdays may be required to support community outreach events and special programming, as needed. Level and salary commensurate with experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Create and maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all Library visitors.
  • Use a computer to create and maintain patron records, circulate material, locate materials for patrons, and answer reference questions.
  • Assist with daily Library duties, including the opening and closing of the Library, answering phone calls, faxing and copying material, cleaning, shelving, and organizing material.
  • Assist in the development, scheduling, and delivery of Library programs to various age groups, including special events and outreach.
  • Safely operate the Bookmobile and perform all tasks as necessary during assigned routes and stops.
  • Assist in the creation of promotional material.
  • Provide basic computer troubleshooting and general computer assistance.
  • Other duties assigned for Library needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 2 years of experience in customer service or education. 
  • Knowledge of services provided by public libraries.
  • Library or education background preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, computers, and various office equipment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to multitask.
  • Must be able to report to Watford City, ND, daily at the scheduled time.
  • Physical requirements and working conditions:
    1. Must possess the ability to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, vision to read printed material and computer screens, hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone.
    2. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, kneel, stoop, sit, walk, and climb step stools.
