Position Description

St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking an Assistant Branch Manager at the Main Branch Library located in Downtown St. Augustine.

St. Johns County Public Library System (SJCPLS) encourages a love of literature, the arts, and lifelong learning by providing a variety of information, resources, and entertainment to the community. SJCPLS serves all areas of St. Johns County, including St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fruit Cove, and Hastings. The Library System has six branches, two bookmobiles, and offers books-by-mail service. In addition to books, periodicals, and online databases, SJCPLS offers computer access, notary services, Inter-Library Loan, access to a Seed Library, test proctoring, and many volunteer opportunities. The Library System also offers a dynamic range of programming for adults, teens, and children.

Employees work in a team-oriented environment and are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, youth and adult service areas.   

Examples of Duties

The ideal Assistant Branch Manager candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates, trains and mentors the branch program department, including filling in as needed to lead programs.
  • Oversees the Reference Department and Adult Services Librarian. 
  • Assists in the collection and analysis of branch statistical reports including cash management.
  • Resolves patron questions, concerns, or complaints.
  • Is the manager in charge in absence of the Branch Manager. 
  • Provides reader’s advisory, reference, and general information to patrons of all ages; provides assistance and instruction regarding the use of databases, catalogs, and computer applications.

  • Assists with public relations and publicity operations for the library.
  • Library staff work cooperatively between all six branches and bookmobiles to provide needed public services throughout St. Johns County. Staff are subject to work assignments at other library branches, county locations, and outreach events on occasional, semi-permanent, or permanent bases depending on staffing and public need. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates for the Assistant Branch Manager are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science and one (1) year of professional level, paid and progressively responsible library or equivalent experience, or one (1) year working experience as a Librarian I.
  • Prior working experience applying professional library principles, methods, practices and materials to public service work.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
