Calendar: 183 Days, 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday
The Library Assistant / Behavior Support Specialist manages the daily operations of the school library while also supporting students who need behavioral intervention or are assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS). This dual-role position promotes literacy and academic engagement while fostering a positive, structured, and supportive environment for all students.
The Library Assistant ensures the library is organized, welcoming, and resource-rich, while also serving as a steady and encouraging presence for students working through behavioral challenges. The position does not require librarian certification but demands strong organizational, interpersonal, and student support skills.
High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree or equivalent coursework in library science, education, or a related field preferred.
Experience in a library, educational, or behavioral support setting preferred.
Familiarity with library software systems and educational technology.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with students who display challenging behaviors.
Demonstrated ability to maintain composure, consistency, and professionalism in high-stress situations.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and school information.
Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
Oversee daily operations of the library, including opening and closing procedures.
Manage check-in/check-out processes and maintain accurate circulation records.
Organize, catalog, and process new materials to ensure the collection is up to date and accessible.
Maintain a clean, safe, and inviting library environment.
Promote reading and literacy through programs, displays, and school-wide initiatives.
Supervise and support students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) or requiring behavioral intervention.
Maintain a structured, respectful environment focused on accountability, reflection, and academic progress.
Reinforce school-wide behavioral expectations and restorative practices.
Communicate with administrators, counselors, and teachers regarding student behavior and progress.
Document attendance, behavior incidents, and academic completion for ISS students.
Provide encouragement and guidance to help students develop positive behavior strategies and decision-making skills.
Assist in re-entry meetings or transition plans to help students return successfully to class.
Assist students and staff with locating, selecting, and using library and media resources.
Support classroom instruction by helping integrate library materials and digital tools.
Provide research and reference assistance to students and staff.
Encourage student engagement in reading, technology, and independent learning.
Support the use of educational technology in the library, including online databases, e-books, and multimedia tools.
Assist students and staff with computer and printer use, and troubleshoot minor technology issues.
Coordinate with IT support when technical assistance is needed.
Maintain accurate records of library usage, ISS attendance, and student behavior documentation.
Track overdue library materials and follow up as needed.
Prepare usage and behavior reports as requested by the administration.
Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to support literacy, learning, and student success.
Participate in professional development opportunities related to library management, student supervision, and behavior support.
Contribute to school-wide initiatives that promote positive culture, reading, and student growth.
Assist with administrative tasks, special projects, or school events as directed by the Principal.
Provide additional supervision or support during testing, assemblies, or other school activities as needed.
Regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to handle materials.
Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
Must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs.
Occasionally required to reach, climb, or bend to shelve books or manage library spaces.
Work performed in a library and classroom environment with regular student and staff interaction.
May occasionally require evening or weekend work for school events or literacy programs.
Must be able to maintain composure and positive rapport with students demonstrating behavioral challenges.
