Description

Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the Circulation Supervisor, the Library Assistant greets and assists library patrons; maintains library records and completes computerized transactions using the library’s automation system. Additional tasks may include shelving, materials processing, repair of materials, and other related tasks as needed and assigned. 

Duties

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Assist library patrons in finding materials, answer questions and provide information to the public in a consistently friendly and courteous manner, providing good customer service to every patron 
  • Use the automation system to check materials in and out of the library; check and empty book drops; record damaged materials and process items for the hold shelf.
  • Shelve books daily; inspect shelves for overdue materials; process new materials and mend and/or clean materials when necessary.
  • Open and close the library; set up the circulation desk and prepare daily circulation reports; ensure materials are checked in and properly displayed.
  • Performs routine accounting functions; receives and processes invoices, participates in monitoring department and grant budgets; processes cash receipts.
  • Accept fees for lost or damaged materials, photocopies and other library services; issue receipts; set up and close down cash drawers; send and receive faxes for patrons.
  • Assist librarians in the preparation and administration of programs as needed.
  • Assist in processing new materials, development of displays, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment as needed and assigned.
  • Assist with inventory as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school or GED required
  •  Specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; E.G. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc.
  •  6  months related experience and/or training. 
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Oklahoma Library Certification from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries preferred

Knowledge and Skills:                 

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Able to speak publicly
  • Read and understand complex documents
  • Basic math skills including adding and subtracting two digit numbers, multiplying and dividing with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units fractions, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Operate complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, office machines and equipment
  • Operations requiring almost continuous attention, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a habit cycle is formed; operations requiring intermittent directed thinking to determine or select materials, equipment or operations where variable sequences may be selected by the employee.
