What you will do: 
Library Assistants are responsible for providing library services to the community, including direct customer service and operational support. Duties include checking materials in and out, shelving, sorting, retrieving library items, and staffing customer service desks. This position also provides basic reference and technology assistance to library patrons. Employees work under general supervision. Supervising other employees is not a responsibility of this position, however, employees in this role may provide guidance and support to other Library Assistants and volunteers.

Additional information on job responsibilities:
  • Connect customers with library products, services, materials, and events.
  • Answer and resolve questions about services and accounts, and provide information, directions, referrals, and routine reference and readers' advisory.
  • Assist with service delivery of routine library functions on location and offsite, including assignment to locations or programs that focus on services to specific audiences. 
  • Use automated library systems to fulfill requests from customers. 
  • Check materials in/out, retrieve, sort and transfer materials to other libraries.
  • Assess, collect, calculate, record, and reconcile fines and fees following standard library protocols and procedures.
  • Serving on internal committees and groups.
  • Collect and prepare reports and maintain records related to library activities.
  • May assist with opening or closing tasks.
  • Provide guidance and assist with training of other staff and volunteers.
  • Established library practices and procedures. Assistance with building safety and security by reporting concerns, customer behavior, and being aware of surroundings.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment, Wi-Fi, and software.
  • Perform from basic to complex online searching.
  • Physical Requirements: lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects with or without accommodation. Balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing 2 hours or more, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, manual dexterity, grasping and repetitive motions with or without accommodation. Work is performed indoors in an office environment, however, occasional offsite assignments or events outside library facilities in outdoor weather conditions may be required.
  • Recommends or shares ideas by means of verbal communication.
  • Visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, expansive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection), using measurement devices, and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • Must work on weekends or evenings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana), depending on area of assignment.
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to report to/from work sites, events, trainings, and meetings.
  • High School Diploma/GED, and one year of customer service or related work experience, or equivalent combination of education or coursework, experience and/or training that would demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and the ability to perform the essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (Not required to apply):
  • Associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish language or biliteracy skills desired.

  • Knowledge of effective decision-making and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment with competing demands;
  • Experience performing detailed tasks with a high level of accuracy, including shelving library materials using alphabetical and Dewey Decimal Library systems;
  • Knowledge of technology, including experience with Google and/or Microsoft word processing and spreadsheet software, integrated library systems, and other applications; 
  • Experience assisting library users with computers and mobile devices, including troubleshooting basic issues on public computers; 
  • Experience respecting, understanding, and valuing individual differences to support a diverse and inclusive, team-oriented workplace;
  • Knowledge of modern office or library environments, practices, tools, techniques, principles, and technologies, including emerging technologies; 
  • Knowledge of excellent communication practices.
