    SUPPORT STAFF POSITION:

     

    Position:              Library Assistant 

    Location:              Craddock Elementary and Miller Elementary Schools

    Schedule:              8 hrs/day � 193 (185 days plus 8 paid holidays)

    Salary:                   Appropriate step on salary schedule

    Effective:              August 13, 2026

     

    Position Role:

    To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources. See responsibilities below.

     

    Qualifications

       Be a High School graduate /College degree preferred

       Possess superior written and verbal communication skills

       Possess word processing or computer skills

       Possess basic knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System

       Possess library or similar experience

       Experience working with children

       Possess the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with all staff and students

    Performance Responsibilities Include:

       Responsible for the operation and supervision of the library(ies) to which you are assigned.

       Evaluation, selection and requisition of new library materials.

       Assists teachers and students in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes library materials available to supplement the instructional program.

         Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.

         Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instructs teachers and students on use of the system.

         Arranges for interlibrary loan of materials of interest or use to teachers.

         Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library facilities.

         Promotes appropriate conduct of students using the library facilities.

         Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.

         Presents and discusses materials with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of the teacher.

         Selects items to share with students and engages students in stories, activities or the like.

         Provide teachers materials for developing curriculum when required.

         Counsels and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading needs or varying intellectual interests and abilities.

         Encourages reading "outside-of-the-box" and life-long reading practices.

         Arranges frequently changing, book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library patrons.

         Prepares and administers the library budget with the principal(s).

         Supervises library aides/student volunteers in the performance of their duties.

         Participates actively in library and other educational and professional associations on the local, regional, state and national level.

         Removes obsolete and worn materials from the collections.

         Perform the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the library:

         Know the computer system for cataloging, checking books out, checking books in, recording student overdues, and preparing information for fines

         Prepare, process, and receive orders and daily mail

         Process materials, including checking-in new materials

         Maintain magazines, supply inventories, files, and accounts

         Shelve and re-shelve books and media materials

         Adheres to established policy and procedures in dealing with parental complaints regarding library books and/or materials.

         Exercises leadership in developing public relations and information programs concerning the school's library/media center services and effectiveness.

         Assumes responsibility for self-directed professional growth activities such as membership in professional associations, attendance at conventions, participation in professional workshops.

         Perform related work as required and instructed by the Principal.

       Cooperate willingly with other media personnel.

       Work with students in a manner that builds and nurtures a positive attitude toward the library media center specifically and learning in general.
